So you’re feeling scared about birth, before you add another thing to your birth-prep list, ask yourself: what part am I actually scared of?

Is it the pain?

Not knowing what will happen?

Or worrying that you won’t be listened to?

These are different worries, and you deserve support that speaks to yours.

So write down:

1. “I’m worried that…” Choose the worry taking up the most space in your mind.

2. “What I’d like to know is…” Turn that worry into one specific question.

3. “Someone I can talk to about this is…” Bring it to your midwife or doctor or doula, or share it with your birth partner.

An example would be:
“I’m scared I won’t cope with the pain” turns into “What pain-relief options are available, and how can I ask for them?”

Are you ready to take action:
Open the notes app on your phone and finish this sentence: ‘The part of birth that scares me the most is…… Then turn it into one question to bring to your next appointment.

You don’t have to figure it all out yourself.🤍

I’ve given birth three times, and I would never tell another woman that hypnobirthing guarantees a pain-free labour.

Birth is powerful and can be uncomfortable. For me, the value of hypnobirthing was having tools I could practise beforehand and come back to when things felt intense: breathing, relaxation, anchors, understanding what was happening, and knowing I had choices helped me to keep my mind calm and body as relaxed as it could be.

The aim isn’t to pass some test by feeling no sensations. It’s to feel more prepared to meet labour as it unfolds with a calm approach. You know that you can ask for extra supports or pain relief at any time.

Did you use any Hypnobirthing tools in your previous labours?

How do you feel confident about birth when you’ve never done it before?

I’ve been thinking about this since talking to a first-time mother yesterday. She told me she was scared, and I completely understood. The unknown is scary.

In most parts of life, confidence comes from doing something, learning from it, and trying again. But with your first birth, there’s no mock exam. You can prepare, but you can’t practise the whole experience beforehand.

Before my first birth, I’d done the reading. I understood what my body would be doing, I’d practised my breathing, and I knew what mattered to me in a hospital setting. Still, nothing quite prepared me for the feeling of my body taking over.

I breathed and bounced through early labour without even realising I was in labour. Then my waters broke, things ramped up, and I thought, oh, this is it.

There was meconium in my waters, so my baby’s heart rate needed to be monitored. I understood why, but I also wanted to keep moving. I told my midwife I’d like to use the ball beside the bed rather than lie down, and she helped me change positions as much as I could. I still remember how much it meant to be listened to.

Eventually, the contractions became so strong that I started tensing against them. I remember thinking, I can’t do this anymore. I need some help. I need pain relief.

My midwife knew my wishes, and she told me I was fully dilated and my baby was nearly here. Hearing that changed everything for me. I could see the finish line. Shortly afterwards, my baby was born, and the feeling was incredible.

That experience gave me confidence for my next birth two years later. I’d learned what my body could do, how much calm support mattered to me, and how my thoughts could affect the way I met each contraction…. Continued in comments.

HYPNOBIRTHING MYTH SERIES ep.2

Myth: Hypnobirthing means you can’t use pain relief.

Truth: You absolutely can. Hypnobirthing can support people preparing for any type of birth, including births involving pain relief, induction, assisted birth or caesarean birth.

Hypnobirthing doesn’t mean you have to promise yourself that you’ll have a completely unmedicated birth.

It’s about learning tools that can help you feel calmer, more informed and more confident about your birth experience. Tools such as including breathing, relaxation, visualisation and understanding what’s happening in your body.

And if you decide you want pain relief? That’s okay too.

You can use hypnobirthing techniques alongside medical pain relief.

You can change your mind.

You can see how labour unfolds and make informed decisions as you go.

There is no “hypnobirthing birth” you have to achieve.

The goal isn’t to prove that you can give birth without pain relief.

The goal is to feel informed, supported and confident in your choices in birth.

Save this for later and send it to a pregnant friend who thinks hypnobirthing might not be for her. ✨

Keep an eye out for the next one!
