Calling all History and Heritage Groups in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown!

We're delighted to announce a new partnership between the Irish Community Archive Network (iCAN) and Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Heritage Office, in collaboration with the National Museum of Ireland and The Heritage Council

iCAN helps local communities preserve and share their heritage by creating digital archives that make local stories, photographs, documents and memories accessible online.

If you're involved in a heritage, local history or community group, we'd love to meet you at our upcoming information evening:

- Access training and support

Congratulations to Donard Imaal History on the publication of their new booklet featuring extracts from the Conservation Plan for Donard Medieval Church & Graveyard.

Funded through an iCAN grant, the booklet makes this important local heritage project more accessible to the wider community and aims to encourage greater involvement in the conservation of this historic site. The publication includes contributions from archaeologist Yvonne Whitty and historian Finn Dwyer, highlighting the rich history and heritage of Donard Medieval Church & Graveyard

We're delighted to feature in the latest Curator's Choice video from the Irish Museums Association, produced as part of Heritage Week 2026.

This short film highlights the contribution of Louisburgh & Killeen Heritage, to the National Museum of Ireland's 'Our Irish Natural History' exhibition at the Dead Zoo Lab.

Focusing on the corncrake, one of Ireland's most endangered bird species, the video explores how changes in farming practices have contributed to the loss of its habitat. It also highlights the important role that community knowledge, local traditions and community connections can play in conservation and environmental awareness.

A wonderful example of how local heritage and museum collections can come together to deepen our understanding of biodiversity loss and environmental change!

Bats at dusk! 🦇Join Sheila Murphy, Biodiversity Officer with Mayo County Council, for a guided bat walk around Ballinrobe and discover the fascinating nocturnal wildlife living on our doorstep.

PHOTO SCANNING
Help preserve North Mayo’s history by bringing along your treasured old photographs (up to five per person) to be digitally scanned.

You’ll receive digital copies of all suitable photographs to keep while contributing to an important community archive for future generations.

Venue: North Mayo Heritage Centre.
Drop in anytime between 11.00am and 3.00pm on either the 18th & 19th August.

The Bright Sky Cafe is open 10am - 3pm everyday, except Tuesdays.
