Back to school / college is a journey for many at the moment and it brings with it lots of anxiety, for the students themselves, the parents and anyone else in the household! There is no age limit on these feelings and I was reminded of that myself this morning whilst walking with an 11 year old I said “I’m a little apprehensive about going back to university in September whilst working full time “ she said “how many times have you been to college?”, I took some time to think and then said “this will be my 7th” , “well what are you worried about? You have done it before you can do it again!” I think I have a young budding coach 💗
Be gentle with yourself and each other at the moment guys, when anxiety is high, tolerance is low, upset comes easy, and neediness is apparent. Once we have an understanding of why we or those around us feel that way it’s easier for us to accept and support through what generally is a short term transition! 💗
Remind yourself or those students around you of their past success, if the surroundings will be new try bring them for a visit in advance or bring them walking in the area, do anything you can to familiarise them with the area if not the building, describe what the daily routine will be like as best you know! Remember most anger comes from fear, and fear of the unknown faces a lot of students at the moment, especially our leaving certs who will get results at the end of this week and offers next week!!
Keep calm and be kind 💗
