Every step counts.
We recently held a practical Lameness Workshop as part of the SCIP EIP, bringing together participants for a day of hands-on learning focused on understanding and managing environmental risk factors associated with lameness.
The workshop was delivered by Patrick Gowing (Teagasc), Eoin Ryan (UCD) and Ger Cusack (Veterinary Practitioner), who shared their expertise and practical insights on how the farm environment can influence cow mobility and lameness risk.
Building on the Lameness Risk Assessment training held in Moorepark in December 2025, the workshop focused on three key areas:
🔹 Parlour and cow flow
🔹 Drafting areas, footbaths and housing
🔹 Roadways
Participants had the opportunity to explore these areas in greater detail, identify potential environmental risk factors and discuss practical ways to manage those risks.
From how cows move through the parlour, to the design and management of housing and footbaths, and the condition of roadways, the day highlighted the importance of looking at the whole farm environment when working to reduce lameness and improve herd health and welfare.
