If you can have your weekends off, then Friday can feel like a little race to finish everything and finally get to the weekend.🩷🤍
But sometimes our heads don’t quite get the message that the working week is over. We keep replaying conversations or situations in our heads.
And when in a blink of an eye, Monday is here and we’re still tired, as we never let them rest. It is also quite easy for our thoughts to turn those conversations into “they always…”or “they never…”
I was reminded of this during a coaching conversation with a client this week.
*Note: I use “they” here to protect my client’s privacy.
They are a manager and we were talking about communication with one of their employees.
At one point they said:
“They never listen to me!”
So we stayed with that for a little while.
We talked about the situations where this was happening, what was making those conversations difficult and whether there were times when the communication worked differently.
And gradually, it became clear that their employee didn’t “never” listen.
There were particular things where they seemed to struggle to understand what their manager was trying to communicate.
And that changed the conversation.
Instead of “Why don’t they listen to me?”, it became more about:
“What happens between us when we’re talking about these particular things?”
It made me think about how quickly “always” and “never” can turn a few difficult situations into one big pattern in our heads.
So before you close your laptop today, perhaps take a few minutes to think about your own week.
Is there a conversation or situation you’ve been carrying around that might look a little different if you stepped back and looked at it with a bit more curiosity? from a different angle?
You might even surprise yourself by what you’ll notice.
Happy Friday. 🩷🤍
