The term tree hugger has old origins and originates from India in 1730 when Amrita Devi and 362 other members of the Bishnoi community started hugging trees near their village to stop them being logged for building a palace. The king’s army killed them. Eventually the king stopped the massacre and prohibited any more trees being cut down.

Since then, hugging trees has been adopted all around the globe as a form of protecting forests from being logged.

In recent decades it started being used as a derogatory term towards environmental activists. Undermining the important work people do to look after earth for the greater good. I think I was called a “dirty/lazy tree hugger” for at least 4 years while involved in forest campaigning.

Language is so powerful and can be used for good or not good. Have you noticed that when certain movements gain traction and momentum to make big progressive change people in power use language to aid in throwing folks off course.* But knowing the powerful, defiant origins of this term cuts through any distracting noise.

I’ll always be a tree hugger💚.

* other examples include the term ‘woke’ which originated in the African America community around the 1930s and referred to folks staying awake to racial prejudice and discrimination. I.e stay woke ..

My work facilitating 🌀Haumea Ecoversity didn’t come from just theory.

It grew from tending land, restoring small peatland bog habitats, and learning, co-creating with community over time.
