We were delighted to facilitate a family fun day on Saturday funded by SKDP. The day involved learning all about bogs, how they are formed, the importance of our bogs and the unique flora and fauna that you will find there. We carried out many activities and had a lot of fun on a lovely area bog at the foot of Carrauntoohil. We finished the day with some scrumptious Apple pie at Cronins Yard! Thanks to everyone that joined us, a fantastic day was had by all 🌞

Final day at of camp at Scoil Réalt na Mara, Cromane 🦋🦡🦔

We started the day learning all deer in Ireland, playing games and making final touches to out animal shelters that they worked on all week

We did arranged some activities based on oncreading our knowledge about the trees on the school grounds: a leaf scavenger hunt to ID some trees, stethoscopes to 'listen ' to the trees, mirrors to get a different view of the woodland and a game for children to 'meet a tree ' blindfolded.

We finished the day off with practicing our flint and steel skills, munching on S'mores around the fire and making tree spirits.

Wowee..what a week !!! Wed like to thank all the children who came to camp and got involved in all the activities with great enthusiasm. We'd also like to thank the teachers, principal and the board of management who helped make the camp possible. Scoil realt na Mara, Cromane has wonderful grounds and great diversity.

Day 3: Nature camp Scoil Réalt na Mara, Cromane - what a difference a day makes 🌧️☔🌧️! We still managed to spend the majority of the time outside 😃

We set traps again the night before and the children caught 3 bank voles and 1 mouse. They looked at the differences between the two species before releasing them back.

We set up a tarp to protect us from the rain and the the children made extensions to their animal shelters they had made the day before.

The children learned all about different habitats in Ireland and the amazing story of how bogs are formed. They also learned about birds of prey including the kestrel, falcon and sparrowhawk.

We finished by making some nature arts and crafts and finally having a lovely hot chocolate around the fire circle.

Great second day nature camp Scoil Réalt na Mara, Cromane

We were lucky to meet a bank vole this morning and learn all about its behaviour and diet. The bank vole was released back into the woodlands gently and carefully.

We then got to practice making small fires using flint and steel and experimented which natural materials would light.

Children had great fun on the rope bridge with many different strategies on getting to the otherside

Finally we discovered a frog in the
woodlands and then made some small shelters/animal homes.

Great first day of nature camp Scoil Réalt na Mara, Cromane

We learned about the mammals of Ireland and had a good investigate of our taxidermy colletion.🦡🦔 We used nets & pooters to collect bugs and invertebrates on the wonderfully diverse school grounds.🐞🦋🐌🪳 The children used microscopes to identify their catch before releasing their collection back to nature.

Children played a great game of fox and
rabbit and got in touch with their creative side by using clay to make a nature inspired clay creature. We finished the day with a scavenger hunt and set live mammal traps to see will there be any small mammals in the morning 🐁🐀. Phew a bust day and more exciting activities to look forward to tomorrow
