A big well done to former student Oisin Lane; who can be extremely proud of his performance at the European T&F Championships in Birmingham, where he produced impressive results on the senior European stage.
It was an early 7.30am start last Saturday for Oisin as he lined up for the half marathon race walk. Held on a tight, looped course through Birmingham city centre, the race featured more than 100 athletes, with the menโs and womenโs events taking place alongside the marathon race walk.
The early start meant temperatures were not at their highest, although conditions remained warm. With large crowds lining the course, including a terrific contingent of Irish supporters the atmosphere was electric as the athletes repeatedly passed the cheering spectators.
Oisin stuck firmly to his race plan, carefully negotiating the tight turns, uphill and downhill sections and varying surfaces, all while remaining under the close scrutiny of the judges. He stayed around the middle of the field for much of the race before making his move over the closing kilometres.
His strong finish saw him cross the line in a brilliant 11th place in 1:27.09. Even more impressively, the performance was a personal best by a remarkable four minutes, underlining just how significant an achievement it was.
