The Elephant in the Room - Recruitment and Retention Meeting Outcome.

Good morning,

We wanted to provide you with an update following our recent meeting with the department and various stakeholders regarding recruitment and retention in the early years sector. Firstly, we would like to express my sincere thanks to all members who participated and contributed with innovative suggestions, bringing a strong sense of purpose to the table.

One important point to note is that prior to our meeting, Siptu announced the launch of their latest campaign advocating for a minimum ERO rate that is just simply ludicrous at this stage. While we cannot delve into the specifics of the meeting due to confidentiality reasons, we want to emphasize that your voices resonated powerfully during our discussions.

It has become increasingly evident that our strength lies in unity and solidarity. As business owners, many of us have family members, friends, and loved ones working alongside us in our endeavors. Frankly, in my opinion this is a huge part of what seems to be missing in the mindset of pay talks. The truth is, any provider we have had conversations with on the topic would love to pay more, but the funds are just not there! It is imperative that we address the pay gap in our sector and strive to bring it to a level that is not only higher but at least on par with other industries that are draining our resources.

The current challenges we face, including underfunding, excessive regulation, and government policies that hinder our operational capacities, cannot be ignored any longer. We must question where the resources to meet increased wage demands are expected to come from. Stating the only reasonable solution here, it has to come from Government! No sector can be expected to operate with the current restrictions and regulations and blatant disregard imposed here, it’s simply backbreaking. The ongoing strain on our sector is unsustainable and threatens the very foundation of our businesses.

We cannot continue to tolerate this disregard and lack of comprehension regarding the critical issues facing our sector. It is clear that without immediate action, our resources will be depleted, and our businesses will suffer irreparable damage.

Together, we must stand firm and united in advocating for the necessary changes to ensure the sustainability and prosperity of the early years sector. We know it is overwhelming, and our small businesses are suffering. But, we cannot give up and allow this to continue. Let us not falter in our commitment to address these challenges head-on, we must band together and demand the recognition and support we rightfully deserve.

We are here for you!

Let us continue to work together towards a brighter future for the early years sector.
