There is a large and growing body of research on second language learning in diverse learning contexts. While much of this research has focused on typically-developing learners, there is also a substantial body of evidence concerning learners who might be regarded as “at-risk” with respect to their general development or educational achievement. Results from these studies have expanded our understanding of the suitability of second/additional language learning in home and school settings for learners with diverse backgrounds and learner characteristics. In this talk, I will review evidence on these kinds of learners. Specifically, I will review research on students with developmental disorders, students living in disadvantaged socio-economic circumstances, and students from third language backgrounds. Evidence concerning both first and second language development and academic achievement will be considered, particularly in the case of students in immersion or CLIL-type school programs. The ethical, policy, and pedagogical implications of these findings will also be considered.
