Organising of events and tours open to the public; Running Little Museum of Memories; Outreach to sc The Athlone Heritage Group was formed in September 2007.
It is a voluntary group, established to monitor all building developments in Athlone town and its environs, which may affect the aesthetic appearance, integrity and historical value of the town. The group successfully campaigned to save the Fr. Matthew Hall from demolition, and since then has gone on to undertake a number of endeavours to raise awareness of the heritage of Athlone. In June 2012 we
widened our scope to include Athlone's social history and opened Athlone Folk Museum in Barnett Street, the Strand. It housed a collection of old Athlone photographs, artefacts and memorabilia connected to the town. We had over 500 vistors from around the world and some national and local visitors too. In June 2013 we moved to a bigger premises at 1 Lloyd's Lane and re-opened our Museum under the new name of Little Museum of Memories. Here we have a large collection of old and rare photographs; a room dedicated to local people who in some way or other made a positive difference to the town through their work in the field of arts, sports, music etc. The Museum also has a display on the history of the town including the Battle of Athlone, a John Count McCormack Exhibition, a Famine Room and a River photo display as well as many interesting artefacts that will bring visitors back to the past such as the 1950s Kitchen.
