We had the most wonderful trip to the Beara peninsula recently for a week’s holiday which was made unforgettably extra special by a visit to Eoghan Daltun’s magical atlantic rainforest.
Eoghan’s naturally regenerating native woodland is a perfect example of how nature can be restored, ecosystems can thrive once again, and a healthy functioning environment can be achieved within a relatively short period of time.
The rhododendron is gone (unfortunately it is prolific across the peninsula), oak, birch and holly saplings are helping to form a multi-generational woodland, the stunning veteran trees are splendid with epiphytes (plants that can live on top of plants) such as mosses, lichens, liverworts, hornworts, ferns, and on a scorcher of a day, and after 2 months of drought in Ireland, we felt cool and happy in the moist and peaceful environment of the forest.
Climbing and chatting, through the steep and lovely leafy and woody landscape eventually brought us up and out onto a massive rock where we sat and enjoyed a picnic while looking out over the native forest canopy and the Wild Atlantic - it is a magical memory that will stay with us forever. And of course the company was the best you can get ! We had great craic !!
Spending time with lovely people who care deeply about the natural world is a tonic for the soul. 💚
A week after we came home from Beara, we went to see the beautiful film An Irish Atlantic Rainforest An Irish Atlantic Rainforest - Film in the IFI. It is a must see!! It has been selling out in Cork and Dublin so we would advise you to book early when new dates are released.
