Today was magic!

We kicked off our biodiversity monitoring project which was made possible through funding support from which we are very grateful to have been awarded ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™

Thanks to our wonderful team of volunteers, to the MSc students who are joining us this summer on this project, and to Jack for filming the day.

It is so important to measure biodiversity so we can track abundance and diversity increases/decreases over time.

We are focusing on recording bumblebees and pond life this year.

There are few sights to compare to that of a swathe of native wildflowers, in bloom! ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒธ

Buzzing with bees ๐Ÿ and with mesmerising butterflies ๐Ÿฆ‹ fluttering through.

Bad News:
We have lost close to 97% of our wildflower rich hay meadows here in Ireland.

Good News:
We can all help restore this precious habitat, in any size outdoor space.

Allow an area to grow unmown for the Summer.

This will provide a rich supply of nectar and pollen and an incredible habitat for a vast range of wildlife.

Late Summer cut the meadow/ wildflower patch , remove cuttings. Compost or pile in corner to create another habitat.

Watch year after year as your meadow bursts with colour and life.

Pictures of us in our small suburban back garden awash with Oxeye Daisy and multitudes of other species.

Also some pictures of one of our Wildflower meadows at Wildacres.

All wildflowers already there and were just waiting for a chance to shine!

Hope springs from actionโ€ฆ.This mono-species ryegrass field was transformed in November 2020 into a wildlife pond.

The invertebrates arrived, then swallows, sand martins, house martins, swifts, mallard, little grebe, mooorhen, heron, eel, sticklebacks, otter, bats, frogs, newts, bulrush, reeds, broadleaf pondweed, yellow flag irisโ€ฆ..and of course Kingfisher the star of this video!

Where once there was nothingness now there is life in diversity and abundance.

Build it and they will come.

Ireland has many eNGOโ€™s advocating for the our environment

Every week should be biodiversity week! ๐Ÿธ๐Ÿ’š

We love are 6 new ponds on plot 2. This โ€˜Sโ€™ shaped one is my favourite ๐Ÿคฉ

Thanks to ReFarm Wicklow for their amazing funding support ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿธ

We had 3 super events on at Wildacres over the last week finishing with our sell-out Gardening for Biodiversity Workshop yesterday. We met so many wonderful people wanting to explore how they can bring wildlife back in abundance in their area.

Weโ€™re feeling the groundswell and itโ€™s amazing. More and more people wanting to reconnect with nature and protect it.

Great to be part of a community of change-makers. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Itโ€™s World Bee Day! ๐Ÿ By only cutting pathways through a garden lawn, allows wildflowers to bloom for pollinators such as our bees, hoverflies and butterflies to forage on for pollen and nectar. ๐ŸŒบ

One third of our solitary bees and bumblebees are at risk of extinction in Ireland. They need our urgent helpโ€ฆ..

They need:
1. food - pollen and nectar from wildflowers
2. clean water - create a wildlife pond
3. Shelter - cavities, rough grass and ground nesting opportunities eg bare earth banks
4. healthy environment - no chemicals โ€ผ๏ธ

Say no to any โ€˜cidesโ€™ in your garden - no herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, molluscicidesโ€ฆโ€ฆ

At 6:09 this morning the male Great tit brought a juicy caterpillar to the female.

His coming and going makes the nest look like a disco ๐Ÿ•บ ๐Ÿ˜†
