Check out the venue for our CPD Summer Course "Rooted In Nature". The Tent is a manifestation of our decisions to live a low impact life and share big picture thinking for positive change with our local and international community.
Originally conceived for a family gathering, the whole vibe is easy going and comfortable. We've hosted educational courses, day retreats, open-mic evenings, musical concerts, big birthdays and a wedding here.
The Tent has an earth floor overlain with carpet, giving a softer feel than concrete or wood.. It sits next to part of the wall that protects the organic garden. It's adjacent to the vegetable patch, which is usually incorporated into our nature-based courses.
We offer tea, coffee and healthy snacks throughout this 20 hour face-to-face CPD course. Join us from

.What are the learning outcomes for Rooted In Nature, our CPD course for primary school teachers?

During this in-person course, participants expand their own relationship with nature and practice techniques to help their students reconnect with the natural environment.
The course takes place in a Special Area of Conservation, ancient woodland and organic garden in Co. Carlow, the perfect venue for nature immersion.
Is it enjoyable? "Very good course with enjoyable, engaging content." said Mary, one of our past participants. “Great atmosphere, really enjoyed the week with Tom and Pam. Will be back!” said another.
The course is focused on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Well-being with application to the curricula of Science, Geography and History.
LO’s include:

• Enhance eco-literacy to recognise and express links between curriculum strands and real world.
• Deepen teachers’ awareness of the scale, complexity and dynamic of diverse interrelated natural systems of which we are all a part. Reconnect with nature to awaken senses. Plan for a greater level of outdoor education on a weekly basis.
• Lower stress and nurture calm engagement among your pupils. Individual learning is enhanced through mindful tools to help teachers observe their own internal responses. This can become an individual practice that affects the school environment. Children can learn and benefit from mindfulness, which promotes self-awareness and wellness in children and is helpful in countering disruptive influences of social media from outside school.
• Discuss challenges like social media and dealing with bureaucracy.
• Explore ways of creating further high-quality learning opportunities with students through SESE curricular links wellness awareness.

“The greatest danger in times of turbulence is not the turbulence – it is to act with yesterday’s logic.” Peter Drucker’s comment captures the need for system change that defines Astraea.

When we stepped out of our old lives and into the unknown in 1999, we had a clear goal: To find balance between people, profit and planet. We shared information on our original website to broaden people’s perspectives, and to help people help themselves. The science behind body, mind and spirit – how we can manage ourselves to create positive change within and around us – were the early tools.

What’s next? 2025 will be a year of transformation. Global challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, wars and nuclear threats, and the ballooning wealth gap are now much more familiar issues, and people are raising their voices to demand change, justice and peace.

At a local level, businesses and the public – particularly the up and coming generation – need to align expectations and goals with our challenging reality, value our connection to nature, and reflect these ideas in everyday life and business.

We explore systems and the urgent need for system change in our books Common Sense and How To Get Rich And Famous, describing how consumerism, patriarchy and religion have put us on an unsustainable path.

We challenge people’s perspectives through Feast Upon The Earth, a large timescape graphically depicting the evolution of Earth, life and humanity. Conversations with audiences show a thirst for understanding our world, our universe, our place in it, and our personal and collective happiness.

Over this quarter century, we have helped businesses and individuals see their life and work with a bigger perspective and more clarity. We’ve given people courage to take the next step – or a new direction. And we’ve continued to walk the talk of caring for the planet by growing food, managing land without chemicals, planting trees, and protecting an ancient woodland along the River Slaney with all its natural diversity.

Inward reflection brings clearer goals and more effective action. These steps are reflected in our simple model for a happy life: “Breathe, think, flow”. We look forward to more positive change for ourselves, our clients and our world in the next quarter century. Join us on the journey. Join our community, sign up to our newsletter, and enjoy a transformative 2025 with us.

Happy new year!
