Microplastics that carry pollutants on their surfaces may have harmful effects on food chains when ingested by filter feeders. EPHEMARE Universität Heidelberg researchers have developed a novel approach for loading of pollutants to microplastics (MP) to test the toxic effects of these MP in-vitro. https://bit.ly/2P6uFhu

Dear all, we are wondering if you can help out with a query by a third year student from the university of Liverpool. She is trying to identify what the small concave domes are at the bottom of the photo for a microplastic project she is working on. Initially she suspected spores but found out they’re not and they’re not organic. These domes don’t reoccur within any of her other sample (from muddy estuarine areas). If you have any idea what they could be and if they could potentially be BPVA-PVA polymer hemispheres please let us know in the comment function below and hopefully we can help out. Thank you

Aoife Deane from the MaREI Centre for Marine and Renewable Energy came in to talk to our young sailors today about caring for the marine environment. The talk entitled Ocean Devotion covered the importance of the sea to our lives – for providing food, transport, leisure and oxygen – why we need to care for it, and how we can take action. Little things we can do make a big difference – think reduce, reuse and recycle! Investing in a reusable water bottle and coffee cup, buying less single use plastic when food shopping, and taking part in beach cleans all help reduce plastics in the ocean and the harm it does to animals. Scientists estimate that 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals die every year because of marine litter through entanglement or ingestion so it really is a huge problem but one we can do something about!

All the young sailors were given a steel straw from Sailors for the Sea to encourage them to skip plastic straws – straws are consistently on the top 10 lists for marine litter collected at beach cleans, which are avoidable along with some other common offenders like take-away cups, plastic bottles, cutlery, balloons, and plastic bags.

MaREI have delivered ocean literacy outreach activities at the Royal Cork Yacht Club for the last 3 years, a collaboration which led to the Club running Vovlo Cork Week 2018 as a Clean Regatta, a certification from the Sailors the Sea program. It's coming up to festival season and while we love a bit of glitter did you know it is made of plastic and can end up in the ocean. Across the water 61 music festivals in the UK plan to 'eliminate plastic drinks bottles, straws, food trays, cable ties, toiletry bottles and glitter from all sites by 2021.' Well done, what a great idea. It won't make the festival any less fun, just more environmentally friendly. http://ow.ly/wkXW30jPyUo

@julesdonovan85, the Kitchen and Dining buyer at #medowsandbyrne sent us samples of this amazing @beeswrap so we said we’d give our honest feedback. First off, it works. Like, actually works. The sandwich wrap is brilliant. The smaller squares (for wrapping half a lemon etc) are so handy. We used the larger ones for covering bowls of left overs. You use the heat of your hands to mold the wrap in place (so if a bowl then goes into a fridge the wrap may come slightly undone, but food is still perfect). It’s kind of sticky to the touch. They’re washable 💚 & reusable 💚 (for up to a year!). Made from beeswax, jojoba oil, tree resin, cotton. An assorted size pack is €19.95. Sandwich warp is €11.95. Do I use them? Everyday. Do I use cling film and tin foil? No.

Well done Sean Ferguson for this clever #2minutebeachclean in Gorey. He collects beach toys and at the end of the summer the collection will be split between numerous play schools in Gorey. He did the same lasts years and the collection went to a children’s school in Africa. What an excellent idea.
