Tahun 1997, datang seorang 'bule' Perancis minta diajari "tata basa dan tata krama" Jawa. Beliau antusias sekali belajar memilih kata yang tepat dan menyusun kalimat yang baik. Juga postur tubuh dan mimik muka yang pas saat bicara.
Beberapa bulan berselang saya lihat beliau di TV sedang memberi sambutan. Rupanya beliau orang penting di Kedutaan Besar Perancis. Pejabat yang keren dan hebat, tapi rendah hati.

Daripada mengatakan "Anak pintar dengan nilai bagus di sekolah belum tentu sukses di dunia kerja", bukankah lebih enak didengar bila kita ucapkan "Anak yang tidak pintar dan bernilai biasa saja di sekolah juga bisa sukses di dunia kerja"? Terasa lebih adil dan memotivasi, bukan? Ini salah satu contoh penggunaan "politik bahasa".

Di masa saya sekolah dulu, jurusan favorit adalah IPA, disusul jurusan IPS, baru jurusan bahasa....Dulu sempat minder juga, tapi kini, saya merasa beruntung, saya bisa hidup dari industri jasa bahasa. Lebih seru lagi, saya bisa bertemu (dan membantu) banyak orang penting.
