Institute of International Studies (IIS) was established in 2010 as a research arm, publication and advocacy unit under the Department of International Studies Universitas Gadjah Mada. As a department-attached research institution, IIS pursues to develop an understanding of the international issues on a theoretical level and put it on a practical level for the realization of peace and justice. IIS is a home to lecturers, students, academic staffs and researchers of Department of International Relations Studies committed to deepening and employing their expertise in the research, policy advocacy, academic writing and publication, as well as community service activities.

Institute of International Studies, Universitas Gadjah Mada, and The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) warmly invites scholars, researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and community actors to submit abstracts for the International Conference on the Gender-Responsive Humanitarian, Development, and Peace (HDP) Nexus. This year’s theme is:

⭐️Women’s Leadership for Inclusive Resilience: Leaving No One Behind for Sustainable Peace and Crisis Response⭐️

This conference provides a valuable platform to share ideas, research, and experiences in advancing gender-responsive approaches to humanitarian action, development, and peacebuilding. [Keynote Speaker Reveal: The Future of Loss & Damage Governance]

We are excited to announce our keynote speaker for the final session of the CLIC-3 Reading Group Loss and Damage (L&D) on Critical Political Economy of Climate Governance” on the topic of the Future of L&D Governance.

This session will consist of a keynote speech to be given by Adv. M. Hafijul Islam Khan, LLM (University of Dhaka), LLM (Central European University).

Mr. Khan is an environmental lawyer affiliated with the Supreme Court of Bangladesh and a climate change negotiator with Bangladesh Delegation. He is the founder and Director of the Centre for Climate Justice-Bangladesh (CCJ-B). He is one of the lead climate negotiators for 44 Least Developing Countries (LDCs) group at UNFCCC and acting as coordinator for Loss and Damage Team of LDCs. He served as the Co-chair of the Executive Committee of Warsaw International Mechanism for loss and damage at UNFCCC. Currently he is serving as Alt. Member of the Paris Agreement Implementation and Compliance Committee. Mr. Khan is an advisor to the LDCs Member to the Board of the Fund for Responding Loss and Damage at UNFCCC. He worked with New York University Law School, USA as a research fellow and taught Environmental Law in North South University in Bangladesh. He is not only involved with international policy making processes but also one of the drafters of the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) of Bangladesh.

In the midst of genocide in Palestine🇵🇸, one question worth to be reflected is whether the international law works or not?

To answer this question, especially in this specific context, it is necessary to look and trace back its very origin and legacy. Additionally, international law’s shortcomings are exposed analysing the occupation of Palestine, from Israel’s annexation of the West Bank to the genocide in Gaza. As the law is constantly scrutinised, it invokes norms of ‘self-defense’ and ‘national security’, and further worsen the violence in the region. 🌍
