The Hoshizora Foundation commited to realize the equality of right for all Indonesian children to gain proper education, in order to develop their maximum potential and make a better world to live in. We desire to inspire people and dare them to make difference. Foster Siblings Program
The Foster Siblings Program is the main program of Hoshizora. Through this program, an individual kakak is able
to support the education and development of one underprivileged child in Indonesia. In hoshiZora, the sponsor is called “kakak” (The Indonesian word for elder sibling) and the child being supported is called “adik” (The Indonesian word for younger sibling). The kakak gives 1,000 JPY (equal to 10 USD) per month for one child over a predetermined period. This donation is used to help to pay the adik’s educational expenses – school fees, training fees, uniforms, shoes and books. In addition to this financial support, Hoshizora also encourages the kakak to interact and contribute to the social and mental development of the adik. We monitor the academic performance of the adik as well as his/her development. The kakak is more than welcome to review the adik’s development and communicate with the adik he/she supports. Hoshizora acts as a bridge in the communication between the kakak and the adik through the regular letter writing program, video messages and even direct visits. From our experience, motivational messages from kakak are an important form of positive stimulation for the adik. Many underprivileged children are motivated by knowing that people care about their development. This can spur them to try their best to study and struggle to make their dreams come true.
2. Educational Grant Program
The Educational Grant is a program for making irregular donations to support the special or emergency needs of underprivileged Hoshizora children. Any sponsor can give to the Educational Grant at any time, with no specific (min/max) amount set. The main use for this grant is to help pay for school admission and registration fees, examination fees, educational facilities and emergency expenses. Many of the children in Hoshizora have been helped by this irregular donation, especially during the school admissions process. Many children are forced to drop out because of expensive registration fees and this grant can make the difference. Some of these donations are also used to provide educational books for a community children’s library nearby the Yogyakarta Headquarters.
3. The Hoshizora Forum
The Hoshizora Forum is an event held at least once a year to gather members of the hoshiZora Family – the children we support, the kakak, and the people who work and contribute for Hoshizora. At this event, we offer fun educational activities for both the children and adults. In previous years, the children have offered performances and we conducted open discussions for the children about reaching their dreams. We invited professionals from some specific fields (Engineering, Education, Astronomy), had cultural exchanges with visitors from Japan and enjoyed educational games together. We have organized six Hoshizora Forums since the establishment of Hoshizora. Each Forum has brought more knowledge, fun, and indispensable learning opportunities to our children.
4. Special Projects
A Special Project is an educational event/project/activity conducted for the Hoshizora adik. There are two kinds of projects under this category:
(1) Projects related to knowledge and skills development
Our projects have included the Volunteer Exchange Program between Osaka University Students and children in Hoshizora, Outbound Activities for the children and an Exchange Program between the Hoshizora adik and children in Japan. (2) Outreach projects for street children and bazaars
The Hoshizora volunteers have held bazaars. The money collected is used not only for Hoshizora adik, but also for street children in Yogyakarta and Jakarta through our outreach projects.
