"Pharris was now doing twenty knots and accelerating, turning her stern to the torpedoes. Her helicopter was now aft of the beam, frantically making runs with its magnetic anomaly detector, trying to locate its adversary.
The torpedo's wake crossed past the frigate's bow as the ship kept her helm over.
There was an explosion aft. White water leaped a hundred feet into the air as the first torpedo collided with the decoy released by Pharris earlier. But it had only one decoy deployed. There was another torpedo out there.
"Left full rudder!" the captain told the quartermaster. "Combat, what about the contact?", he shouted to the Combat Information Center room.
"Not sure, Sir." Came the reply from Combat, "the sonobuoys have our torp, but nothing else".
"We're gonna take a hit," the XO said. He pointed to a white trail on the water, less than two hundred yards away.
It must have missed the frigate on its first try, then turned for another.
Homing torpedoes kept looking until they ran out of fuel.
There was nothing anyone could do. The torpedo was approaching the port bow. If the ship turn right, it would only give the torpedo a larger target. Below, the ASROC launcher swung left toward the probable location of the submarine, but without the order to fire, all the operator could do was train it out. The white wake kept getting closer, the captain leaned over the rail, stared at it with mute rage as it extended like a finger toward his bow, it couldn't possibly miss now!
The impact lifted the captain a foot off the steel dock. He didn't hear the explosion, but an instant after he had bounced off the steel a second time, he was deluged with a sheet of white water that washed him against a stanchion. His first thought was that he'd been thrown overboard. He rose to see his executive officer (XO) - headless, slumped against the pilothouse door.
The bridge wing was torn apart, the stout metal shielding ripped by fragments. The pilothouse windows were gone. What he saw next was worse.
The torpedo had struck the frigate just aft of the bow-mounted sonar. Already the bow had collapsed, the keel sundered by the explosion, and the horrible groaning of metal told him that the bow was being ripped off his ship.
Then the bow tore away. A hundred feet of the ship left the reminder to the accompaniment of screeching metal.
It turned and collided with the after-part as it rotated like a small berg. There was movement at an exposed watertight door. A man tried to get free, and succeeded, the figure jumping into the water and swimming away from the wallowing bow.
The bridge crew was alive, all cut by flying glass but at their posts. Damage control parties were already racing forward with fire hoses and welding gear,

THE TEXAS seemed to float above the ghostly evening mist like a menacing beast rising from the primeval ooze. Her low silhouette stood black and ominous against the backdrop of the trees along the shoreline. Shadowy, phantom-like images of men moved across her decks under the eerie yellow glow of lanterns as moisture trickled down her gray sloping sides and dripped into the sluggish current of the James River.
To landsmen the Texas looked squat and ugly, but to sailors there was a character and grace about her that was unmistakable. She was tough, and she was deadly. Her peculiar design led to a brief but enduring burst of glory.
The Texas's Commander stood on the forward deck and watched anxiously as the Texas began to steam downriver, helped along by a 2 knot current. No wind stirred, and except for the throb of the engine, the river was silent. In the pale light of a quarter moon, she slid across the black water like a wraith, more sensed than seen, almost an illusion.

The TEXAS was a twin-screw. twin-engined vessel, 190 feet in length, 40 feet of beam, and drawing only 11 feet of water. Its sloping 12 foot high sides casemate were angled inward at 30 degrees and covered with 6 inches of iron plate backed by 12 inches of cotton compressed by 20 inches of oak and pine. Her armor continued under the waterline, forming a curled knuckle that extended out from the hull. the TEXAS carried only 4 guns, but theyhad vicious bites: two 100 pound Blakeley rifled guns were mounted fore and aft on pivots that allowed them to be fired on broadside, while two 9-inch, 64-pounders covered the port and starboard.Her engines were big powerful and her heavy boilers lay below the waterline. Her 9 foot screws could push her hull through calm water at 14 knots.

BUT TONIGHT, the Texas might not survive the next few hours.

The Federal Army had stretched an obstruction across the river and dug several artilery emplacements. and the crew of the Texas prepared for the battle ahead.

Inside the casemate, the gun deck was cleared for action. Most of the men had stripped to the waist and stood at their guns with handkerchiefs tied around their foreheads. The officers had removed thier coats and quietly strode the deck in their undrshirts beneath suspenders. The ship's surgeon passed out tourniquets and instructed the men on how to apply them.
Fire buckets were spaced about the deck. Sand was spread to soak up blood. Pistols and cutlasses were issued to repel boarders. Rifles loaded with bayonets fixed on their muzzles. The hatches to the magazine rooms below the gun deck were opened and the winches and pulleys readied to hoist the shot and powder.

THE ONONDAGA is a dual turreted Monitor of the UNION with 11 inches of armor on her turrets, 6 inches on her hull and two powerful 15-inch DAHLGREN smoothbores and 150 pound Patriot Rifles.
A midshipman above the ONONDAGA standing on the forward turret spotted the Confederate ironclad and gave the alarm.
Commander Maston who was captain of the TEXAS held his binocular as he observed his opposite number above the ONONDAGA, Captain John Austin.
At that moment Captain John Austin was a little hesitant because with the numbers of Union warships upstream, he did not expect the Texas to be so far downstream where it was. His hesitation cost him because by the time he shouted for his crew to cut loose their guns, the Texas was passing abeam and moving swiftly toward the ocean.
Consequently the forward turret of the Onondaga came into action a little late, the Texas had already swept past and out of its angle of fire.
At about the same time Commander Maston shouted an order down the open roof hatch of the Texas to drop aside the gun-port shutters so she could poured her three guns broadside into the Onondaga's turrets.

In the meantime,a barrage burst from the shore as shells from unseen batteries and musket fire from sharpshooters began to splatter the Texas like a hail storm.

Consulting his document, he continued, 'a league is four thousand four hundred and twenty-eight American acres, a labor is a hundred seventy-seven. The rule is that you get a labor of free land if you intend to farm it, plus an entire league if you run cattle.' He coughed, folded the document, returned his attention to his Bible and added: 'If I were you, I'd claim I intended running cattle.'
'But we have no cattle.'
