Descartes held that certainty was based Upin the existence of a Perfection which cannot deceive. Moreover the theory of an objective reality, as opposed to an actual reality, proved that we cannot attribute to our body the power to think, for everything pertaining to the body and to the things around it mau be resolved into extent, shape, position, and local movement, and proved that "in the clear and distinct concept of these things there is indeed some sort of extension with them, but no intelligence whatever".
