HIV Among Youth: Protecting a Generation
In commemoration of World AIDS Day (Dec. 1), Vital Signs looks at the alarming impact of HIV on youth, ages 13-24, and underscores the importance of HIV prevention, testing, and treatment for youth.
World AIDS Day Serves as a Call to Action
World AIDS Day is a time to reflect on the impact of HIV around the globe and the efforts to educate everyone on the facts about HIV, to prevent the spread of the virus, and to ensure that everyone with HIV gets proper care and treatment. As part of CDC's U.S. HIV prevention efforts, the November 27 edition of Vital Signs reports on the alarming impact of HIV on our nation's youth, ages 13-24.
HIV Among Youth
An estimated 1.1 million people are living with HIV in the United States and about 50,000 people get HIV each year. Recent data indicate that 1 in 4 (26%) of new HIV infections occur in youth, between the ages of 13-24. In 2010, about 12,000 young people, or about 1,000 per month, were infected with HIV.
Also disturbing is that about 60% of youth with HIV do not know that they are infected and can unknowingly pass the virus to others.
HIV Testing
Since most young people with HIV do not know they are infected, it is vital that youth at risk for HIV be tested and know where to get a confidential HIV test. Gay and bis*xual males should get tested at least annually; those who are at greater risk (e.g., illicit drug use, multiple s*x partners) may benefit from testing more often.
HIV testing helps to save lives and prevent the spread of HIV. For those infected, HIV testing is the critical first step to getting the medical care and treatment needed to help them live longer, healthier lives. Testing is also critical for those without HIV, so they can take steps to stay uninfected.
HIV Risk Education
A coordinated effort by parents, families, schools, community-based organizations, web-based prevention programs, and the government is needed to ensure that all youth understand what puts them at risk for HIV and how to prevent it.
The main risk factors for HIV among youth are
• not knowing how HIV is transmitted and their own personal risk.
• having s*x.
• using alcohol or drugs with s*x.
• injecting drugs.
• having s*x with older partners who may be more likely to already have HIV.
• having multiple s*x partners.
• not using condoms consistently and correctly (having unprotected s*x).
• not getting HIV tested, and, if infected, not getting treated.
Having s*x under the influence of drugs or alcohol can increase risky behaviors such as unprotected s*x. Belonging to a group or living in a community with high rates of HIV automatically puts young people at higher risk because their potential s*x partners are more likely to have HIV. Research has shown that young gay and bis*xual males who have s*x with older partners are at a greater risk for HIV infection. This is because an older partner is more likely to have had more s*xual partners or other risks, and is more likely to be infected with HIV.
Reducing Risk
Youth, particularly those at highest risk, should be reached early with age-appropriate HIV prevention education that includes information about risks and teaches skills to help delay s*x and prevent HIV. CDC supports effective interventions for communities that can help.
The best way for youth to avoid getting infected with HIV is to not have s*x or inject drugs. Youth who are s*xually active can reduce their risk if they stop having s*x or limit their number of s*x partners, do not have s*x with an older person who may be more likely to already have HIV , and use a condom consistently and correctly every time.
Greater Risk for HIV for Some Youth
Among all Americans, more African Americans have HIV than other races or ethnic groups, and gay and bis*xual men are 40 times more likely to have HIV than other men. These trends put young, black gay and bis*xual males at increased risk—especially if they have s*x with older partners who may be more likely to already have HIV.
About 87% of young males got HIV from male-to-male s*x, 6% from heteros*xual s*x, 2% from injection drug use, and about 5% from a combination of male-to-male s*x and injection drug use. About 86% of young females got HIV through heteros*xual s*x and 13% from injection drug use. In 2010, more new infections occurred among young African American males than among young people of any other race/ethnicity and s*x.
Social and economic realities prevalent in some African American communities—such as higher levels of poverty, racial discrimination, limited access to health care and housing, and higher rates of incarceration—are associated with increased HIV risk.
Consistent and correct condom use is essential for HIV prevention. Unfortunately, only 44% of gay and bis*xual males in high school reported using condoms the last time they had s*x.
Action Steps
This issue of Vital Signs on HIV among youth promotes the following action steps:
• Youth can get the facts about HIV and resist pressure to have s*x or use drugs that can lead them to take more chances with s*x. If s*xually active, youth could stop having s*x, or limit their number of s*x partners and use a condom correctly every time. CDC recommends that youth at risk between the ages of 13 and 24 get tested for HIV at least once as part of routine health care.
• Parents and families can talk with their children early and often about HIV and s*xual health facts, and involve their child’s doctor in the conversation. They can also support HIV education and safe environments in schools for all youth.
• Health care providers can follow current HIV testing and treatment guidelines and test young patients at risk for HIV—s*xually active young gay and bis*xual men should be tested at least once a year and those at highest risk may benefit from more frequent testing. Health care providers can also educate parents and youth about s*xual development and HIV prevention.
• Schools, community-based organizations and the web can all be sources for HIV prevention information for youth.
• Everyone can get the facts, get tested and get involved, and we can all support programs to prevent HIV among youth.
CDC and its partners remain committed to HIV prevention education, routine testing, knowing one’s HIV status and reducing risky behavior. But these efforts must be intensified, especially among young people. On this World AIDS Day, let us refocus on how we can work together to protect the lives of this generation of youth to impact both the overall HIV epidemic and to protect generations to come.

ladies and gentlemen
Let me introduce my self : my name is tri joko
I as a representative of major health environment faculty of public health Diponegoro University Very proud and very happy because we can meet, we can gather in the spectacular agenda today
Ladies and gentlemen
Today, in this gold opportunity, I would like to give you a speech about "Our Environment and our major of health environment faculty of public health Diponegoro University "
Environment consists of two main parts which are biotic and a biotic environment. Biotic environment is everything around us which are live, for example plants, animals and human beings. While a biotic environment is everything around us which are not live, for example stone, water, wind, land and etc.
We must protect our environment as good as possible because it can influence our live.
As we know that Indonesia has many tropical forests and it is a source of nature which
can help people live peacefully. So as human being we should preserve the forest.
Conscious or not, we live in this world depends on environment, we drink water from our environment, we breath air from our environment and we eat foods which planted form our environment. Our environment has a great influence in our live. Good or bad our environment definitely will affect our live especially in our health.
Few years ago, when I was younger, I saw many trees in my environment. But right now those trees are gone which causes the Carbon Monoxide can’t be change into Oxygen.
Few years ago, when I was younger, I can breathe deeper without any trouble of cough. But right now when I breathe for just one second, I suddenly cough.
Few years ago, when I was younger, every step that I took, I saw no trash in my sight. But right now trash is like be my friend in every my step.
Ladies and gentlemen
I am sure those experiences have been ever experienced by all people here. So what should we do to recover our environment? I am standing here is not just to tell you about the condition of our environment only, I also want to invite you to do some good things such as planting some trees and put trash in the right place so our environment will save,
As we know that Plants, people, animals and the environment are interdependence. Plants need a good environment for growing, animals need plants to eat, and human need everything to survive. Everything went as usual until the human who destroying it. No one of living things on the earth who can destroying it except the human.
Globalization may already be familiar to you . Globalization can accelerate the rate of economy anywhere. Technology developed over the years become a tool that can easily human works. Even to support it many new technologies are born for example a computer. Unfortunately, the speed of current technological improvement not followed by protecting awareness of surrounding environment. Massive oil drilling caused by the human vehicle is increasing along with increasing human populations from year to year. Finally, the waste produced from the vehicles, become one of the main factors polluted air around us. A lot of environmental damage that we often hear, for example, global warming ,acid rain, greenhouse effect, environmental pollution and so on.
The greenhouse effect caused by excessive carbon dioxide gas and causes global warming makes the earth hotter. The next phenomenon is acid rain, although it can prevent global warming but acid rain is more dangerous. humans are the main causes ! Start From now let's keep our environment for our grandchildren one day later. because no matter how small work you do, will be felt by our children and grandchildren one day later.
Than we realize that the major of health environment is very needed and very important to keep our earth to produce the good generation who care about the environment and has knowledge to prevent the environment getting worse

10 Tips Public Speaking
1. Know your material. Pick a topic you are interested in. Know more about it than you include in your speech. Use humor, personal stories and conversational language – that way you won’t easily forget what to say.
2. Practice. Practice. Practice! Rehearse out loud with all equipment you plan on using. Revise as necessary. Work to control filler words; Practice, pause and breathe. Practice with a timer and allow time for the unexpected.
3. Know the audience. Greet some of the audience members as they arrive. It’s easier to speak to a group of friends than to strangers.
4. Know the room. Arrive early, walk around the speaking area and practice using the microphone and any visual aids.
5. Relax. Begin by addressing the audience. It buys you time and calms your nerves. Pause, smile and count to three before saying anything. ("One one-thousand, two one-thousand, three one-thousand. Pause. Begin.) Transform nervous energy into enthusiasm.
6. Visualize yourself giving your speech. Imagine yourself speaking, your voice loud, clear and confident. Visualize the audience clapping – it will boost your confidence.
7. Realize that people want you to succeed. Audiences want you to be interesting, stimulating, informative and entertaining. They’re rooting for you.
8. Don’t apologize for any nervousness or problem – the audience probably never noticed it.
9. Concentrate on the message – not the medium. Focus your attention away from your own anxieties and concentrate on your message and your audience.
10. Gain experience. Mainly, your speech should represent you — as an authority and as a person. Experience builds confidence, which is the key to effective speaking. A Toastmasters club can provide the experience you need in a safe and friendly environment.
