12 years ago I found both legs sunken deep into 2 very different waters. Daytime revolved around the blood sweat and bacon grease of a smokey commercial kitchen whilst at night I would float on esoteric waves at Sydney’s leading college for holistic healing modalities studying energy medicine.
Never shy of a little paradox, I wrote my very first blog. S.n.a.g.s: sensitive new age guys, yet also meaning sausage in true Australian. The write up featured a recipe for new age beef ribs as I was desperately trying to marry my carnivorous daytime debauchery with my benevolent nighttime energy healing escapades.
That’s when I had a dream where the spirits told me to climb Bali’s highest mountain. Which I did. At the top of the mountain, more spirits told me to move here permanently. I obeyed. Back in Oz I gave away most of my possessions and flew back to Bali carrying merely a backpack and 2000 dollars.
It all felt kind of elusive, like those Buddhist monks on Bondi Beach I visited weeks before that. They spend months creating complex mandalas using coloured sands only to carry them back to the beach and to see their art works be washed away. My mandala, a promising life in the land of Oz consisting of a dream wife, permanent residency, house, lawnmower and indeed a 1000 watt sausage machine.. This mandala had largely washed into the ocean already, making it a heck of a lot easier to submit to some wicked plan of a Bali mountain god.
Picture ‘The Fool’, the first card of the Taro, the start of the hero's journey, walking onto the island in january 2013. Curious, cracked open, floating on clouds of trust and determined not to sink.
After a few adventurous months I landed a gig at a newly opening Silent Retreat, promising the founder not to cook anything with eyeballs.
Unknowingly, I just started a new apprenticeship, this time with the Earth herself. Situated at the base of the Sacred Mother Mountain, the retreat lands became my private university with The Earth being my teacher and cooking my main modality to express my love for her.
One of the major lessons Earth taught me is that we are custodians to, not owners over our relations with land, people and projects. Today I am a custodian, to a few plots of land that became more diverse edible eco system under our guardianship. To the people, who support me side by side on this journey. And to a school, a place where you can learn about life by deepening your connection to Earth.
In this place, the land is our teacher, food is our vehicle, the gardens our playground, the kitchen our temple and the heart our compass.
We call this place New Earth School: Cooking, Growing and Healing.
If the mountain gods invite you to Bali I trust they will extend an invite for you to visit us too.
