Stories like this are one of the reasons why I love my job as a diving instructor so much.
Maud and Sjors did the DSD pool session yesterday and came diving with me this morning. After the pool, especially Sjors still didn't feel very comfortable and was a bit worried about the dive in the sea. I was promising him that as soon as he is in the sea, he will forget about all his worries and will love it! And exactly this happened... Both were descending slowly along the line to help acclimatizing and were doing a brilliant job. controlling their buoyancy etc. We saw turtles, stonefish, scorpion fish, angelfish, porcupine fish and so many more beautiful creatures and both had a huge smile at the end of the dive!
They were amazed how peaceful and beautiful the underwater world is, Maud actually said, "it was like in a movie!"

The divemaster course includes also some swim tests. The 400 m swim can be exhausting, especially in open water with waves! Yury did a good job though and got scored with 3 points. And he even had a little bit strength left for a smile :)

our divemaster candidate Yury was just finishing his 400 m swim! The smile cost him a lot of strength... Good job Yury though, the 400 m swim is definitely one of the hardest swim tests (next to the 100m tired diver tow) during the divemaster training and you ticked it off successfully.

I take my job as a diving instructor very serious as I am not only focusing on teaching my students how to become a prudent conservative scuba diver but also how to take care of our environment and sustain the beauty of it including all the fantastic creatures underwater.

One of my divemaster candidate wrote about our "project aware" reef clean up:

"Pollution is something that has adverse effects on the environment. It's devastating to say the least. Ocean pollution has terrible consequences as it contaminates the water in the sea. This water is the home of several million sea creatures and fish. Man discards waste into the water without thinking twice and due to this marine life suffer serious health consequences. Thousands of tons of waste are dumped into the ocean everyday. On our "project aware" dive on Gili Air House Reef, we filled 3 big bags of garbage from the sea bed during our dive. It's heartbreaking to see so much waste present. But the reality is that this problem exists and hampers aquatic life.

Over one million seabirds are killed by ocean pollution each year. Three hundred thousand dolphins and porpoises die each year as a result of becoming entangled in discarded fishing nets, among other items. One hundred thousand sea mammals are killed in the ocean by pollution each year.

We must all become more aware and more conscious towards protecting the environment we live in. Never dump waste into the ocean. And whenever possible, help by participating in clean up dives."

It fills me with happiness that I can pass on my passion for diving and the ocean to my students and to see such a positive change! That's one reason I do love my job as I can make a change and have purpose, also if they are just tiny!
