Sonora first harvests yield 865 tonnes of shrimp

In the first farmed shrimp harvests in Sonora 865 tonnes were obtained, without having registered significant sanitary issues as those from previous years.

This was announced by the manager of Aquaculture Health Committee of the State of Sonora (COSAES), Baltazar Chavez Dominguez, who said that 29 farms managed to obtain yields of 300 kilograms per hectare and the average mortality rate in this cycle is 10 per cent.

Chavez Dominguez said they had received 89 reports on mortality events on farms. Out of the total, three were presented at the nursing stage, with mortality rates of 90 to 100 per cent, and were attributed to management problems. The analyzes performed did not reveal any evidence of any pathological issues, he stressed, according to Notimex.

In the fattening phase 86 mortality events were reported in organisms with sizes from 0.03 to 12 grams. These were those cases focused only on some ponds, which together represent about 25 per cent of the set surface.

COSAES officers said that in Sonora 183 production units are operating, of which 33 are authorized to operate in intensive system.

So far, there are 138 units that are operating, of which 46 have nursing facilities.

In 2013, farmed shrimp production in Sonora fell by 70 per cent due to the negative impact of the white spot disease virus and of the early mortality syndrome, which caused mortalities of up to 80 per cent in the first 50 days of the farming season.

India to Develop New Aquaculture Areas with Remote Sensing

INDIA - With Andhra Pradesh State having 974km ofcoastline, there is a lot of potential to increase income from captured and cultured fish by creating proper awareness among farmers.

Commissioner of Fisheries Ramsankar Naik said that district and mandal-wise maps were being prepared using remote sensing data to identify creeks and estuaries for undertaking aquaculture, reported The Hindu.
He was speaking at an interactive meet with aquaculture farmers of North Andhra organised at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute to create awareness on best management practices and bio-security and disease management.

Role for Irrigation Department

Mr Naik said he had directed the district authorities to involve the Irrigation Department to undertake de-silting and de-weeding of the potential areas where aquaculture could be taken up.

He said they would set up quarantine facilities for fish and prawn hatcheries in Visakhapatnam and Nellore. Referring to the new fisheries policy, which is under preparation, he said that the government was committed to fish farming.

Advice to Bankers

Calling for easy credit flow into the sector, Mr Naik advised the bankers to be liberal in granting loans.

He also underlined the need for improving cold storage and processing infrastructure, and pointed out how tuna was being sold by some fishermen at Rs 20 per kg even as there was a potential to earn Rs 500 per kg if the tuna was flown within 24 hours to Japan.

Juvenile fish

Mr Naik said fishermen should abstain from capturing juvenile fish. He also hinted that they would supply 2,800 solar pump-sets originally sanctioned for agriculture with a provision of subsidy to progressive aqua farmers.

CMFRI Scientist in-charge of Visakhapatnam centre Shubhodeep Ghosh, Central Institute of Fisheries Technology Principal Scientist U. Sreedhar, and Assistant Director of Drug Control Administration V. Vijaya Sekhar explained the precautions to be taken by the aqua farmers.

Ridley Creates Super Shrimp Feed
A new and potentially world game changing, super feed for farming shrimp is undergoing commercial grow out trials at two of Queensland's large shrimp farm operators - highly regarded as leading pace setters and innovators of Australia's expanding aquaculture industry.
The proof is in their ponds. Both report their tiger shrimp are growing faster and fatter than ever and have exceptional taste and color. Commercial harvests began in late February.

The new feed product – Ridley MR-S is the culmination of 10 years of research by Dr. Richard Smullen and Dr. Matthew Briggs - eminent research scientists working at Ridley - Australia's leading provider of high performance animal nutrition. Close collaboration with farms has been essential for the ongoing development of this feed.
