Beberapa hal untuk direnungkan pada International Women's Day 2026.

Coastal communities in Timbulsloko and Tambakrejo (Central Java) are forced to shift from agriculture-based livelihood to aquaculture (by cultivating mussel) as their farming lands are sinking, due to a tidal flood which has persisted in the last 10 years. The tidal flood is triggered by rising sea levels and coastal abrasion caused by climate change and exacerbated by over-extraction of groundwater and the environmental stresses brought by urbanization. However, this shift in livelihood has incurred them additional cost as they have to depend on low-durability bamboo materials for their mussel cultivation activity. Furthermore, women are also left out of economic and financial decision-making processes when these decisions affect their lives significantly.

Rujak Center for Urban Studies (RCUS) works with a consortium involving academia and civil society organizations to strengthen the economic and environmental resilience of locals amid climate change, while ensuring social justice. RCUS is also a core partner in the Pluralizing knowledge on the relations between water risks and land subsidence: knowledge production, organizing, and campaign in Central Java, Indonesia, supported by the Water and Development Partnership Programme (WDPP), which advances collaborative research and plural knowledge systems in addressing water governance and climate adaptation in delta and coastal regions. We recently held a public lecture program themed Ageing-Friendly Cities: Exploring Shared Residential Commons Area Usage and Its Impact on the Psychological Well-being of Older Adults with Prof. Madya Dr. Khadijah Binti Alavi from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Social Sciences and Humanities School. This program kickstarted a reading group for our Ageing Well in Warming Cities project exploring the impacts of climate change on older adults, in collaboration with the ASEAN Centre for Active Ageing and Innovation and the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

During the public lecture, Prof. Khadijah explored the challenges and opportunities in creating public spaces that will enable older adults to retain a fruitful social life while providing comfort from the heat brought by climate change. She also explored topics of how younger family members could help their elderly cope with adjustment challenges in new settings, as well as how declining birth rates in Asia could impact care work for older adults.

Thank you to all our participants for your enthusiasm during the public lecture!

Recently, Rujak Center for Urban Studies and Universitas Harkat Negeri in Central Java established the Center for Coastal Urban Studies (CCUS). Focusing its initial activities in Tegal, CCUS seeks to bolster coastal cities’ resilience to climate change (including climate-related problems like tidal flooding), while at the same time lower emissions and protecting vulnerable populations through knowledge-based learning and policymaking activities.

We will kickstart our reading group activity titled "Ageing Well in a Warming City: Ageing, Heat, and the Built Environment in Southeast Asia" with a public lecture  titled "Aging-Friendly Cities: Exploring Shared Residential Commons Area Usage and its Impact on the Psychological Well-Being of Older Adults". The lecture will be presented by Prof. Madya Dr. Khadijah Binti Alavi, an associate professor on Gerontological Social Work at the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

Moderated by Prof. Madya Dr. Nor Zalina Harun, associate professor at the Institut Alam Sekitar dan Pembangunan (LESTARI) Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, this public lecture seeks to explore how we can collectively endeavor to provide supportive environments for ageing societies in Southeast Asia amid climate change, so they could still remain active and preserve their well-being.

This program is made possible thanks to a collaboration between the ASEAN Centre for Active Ageing and Innovation, Rujak Center for Urban Studies and the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

This public lecture is open to public. Register via s.id/AgeingFriendlyCities

Happy World Day of Social Justice 2026.
Let us ponder on the collective actions we can take to attain more just city settings, especially in the realms of gender equality promotion, informal economy strengthening as well as sustainable development that could close the systemic socioeconomic gap.

As Southeast Asian cities get hotter, its ageing population becomes more vulnerable to the worst repercussions of climate change. Dense neighborhoods, lack of ventilation and greeneries are among the risk factors which result in a decline of the elderly's quality of life, including reduced mobility and sociality.

Let's explore the impacts of climate change on the elderly through our upcoming reading group. Go to the final slide for more details.
