What looks like a sudden meltdown is usually the result of many small stressors building up over time. Loud noises, social misunderstandings, last-minute changes, feeling rushed, or not being understood can quickly overwhelm a neurodivergent nervous system. Awareness of these triggers helps adults respond with empathy instead of punishment.

Did you know that clumsiness is common in children who have Sensory Processing Disorder?
It's because their brain has trouble processing where their body is in relation to other things...
This is something I cover in my book, Rosalee the Seeker, along with various other signs of sensory undersensitivity.
I also spend about half of the book validating sensory seekers. ๐๐
I also wrote about about a sensory sensitive kiddo... both are currently 20% off in my shop ๐... Nicolefilipponeauthor.com (link in bio)

You can not be a trauma-informed school if you are restraining, secluding, suspending, expelling, and subjecting kids to corporal punishment. These punitive approaches cause trauma.

Presuming competence means believing that apraxic students are capable of learning anything. It does not mean we should assume they already know the information.
Presuming competence is the least dangerous assumption to make.
If we presume incompetence, and it turns out in twenty years that we were wrong, we will have caused immeasurable damage by withholding education and opportunities.

On average, students with ADHD or Executive Function challenges hear an additional 20,000 more corrective messages than their neurotypical peers before they turn 10. Although teachers are becoming more cognizant and accommodating to unique learning profiles, it's still an unfortunate reality that most of these corrective messages are coming from the classroom. This checklist of Executive Function challenges is a great tool to use in better capturing the challenges and needs of your students (particularly in parent teacher-meetings!) The more teachers understand a child's learning profile, the more capable they are to empower them to grow (vs. unintentionally lowering their confidence & self-worth.)
If you know a teacher or school program that could benefit from more Executive Function knowledge, then you're in luck. We have a whole division focused on school trainings to equip educators with the tools they need to better accommodate and reach students of all learning profiles. Many kids THRIVE when they are given structure. They may become overwhelmed without it, may be distracted by visual clutter or overstimulation, or may just not understand what is expected without clear structure and visual support. I love how this post shows how to do this with a clear start, middle, and finish!
I recently took the course for SLPs and OTs and love how Meg gives tons of examples for how to use a childโs strengths to help them be successful!
