An Abandoned Sunnah after Reciting the Quran
It is preferred, on finishing the recitation of the Qur'an to say:
سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، أشهد أن لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ، أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ
"Subhaanak Allahumma wabihamdik ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illaa anta astaghfiruka wa atoobu ilayk".
Aishah (radiyAllahu ‘anha) mentioned that:
The Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was never in a sitting, never recited the Quran, nor did he ever offer a prayer, except that he ended them all with certain words.
She (radiyAllahu anhaa) added:
“So I said to him, O Messenger of Allaah, I noticed that you never are in a sitting, nor do you ever recite the Quran, nor observe a Salaat, except that you end with these words”.
He (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied by saying: “Yes”
“Whoever has said good (words) would have them placed as a seal over the good he has done and whoever has said evil (words) would have them used as an expiation for the evil he uttered”.
(They are):
سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، أشهد أن لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ، أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ).
SubhaanakAllaahumma wabihamdik ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illaa ant, astaghfiruka wa atuubu ilayk.

Abdur-Rahman as-Sa'dee (rahimahullah) said,
"It is incumbent for the slave, whenever he completes an act of worship, to seek Allah's forgiveness for his shortcomings and thank Him for giving him success to perform it."
