The Addicted Brain ~ by Addiction Actually
π As with any other clinical disorder that impairs the function of vital organs, repair and recovery of the addicted brain depends on targeted and effective treatments that must address the complexity of the condition or problem.
π We continue to gain new insights into ways to optimise treatments , therapies and interventions to counteract addictionβs powerful disruptive effects on brain and behaviour.
We now know that with prolonged abstinence, our brains can recover at least some of their former functioning, enabling people to regain control or management of their lives.
π That said, the chronic nature of addiction means that relapsing to drug/alcohol, behavioural addictions is not only possible but likely,
π Addiction has relapse rates similar to those for other well-documented chronic lifestyle related conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma.
π For all of these conditions including addiction, treatment involves changing deeply embedded behaviours.
π Relapses should not be considered failure but rather indicate that treatment needs to be reinstated or adjusted, or that an alternate approach is needed.
π Addicted individuals also need to do their part.
π Even though they are dealing with a compromised brain that affects decision-making and judgement those with addiction must take responsibility to get treatment and actively participate in it.
π Recovery is usually a lifelong process that requires more than just abstinence.
