Industry-Shaper, Legacy creator, our dearly revered Dr Florence Lee
Milestones in a life of education

Dr Florence Lee was an influential pioneer in raising the standard and professionalism in Singapore’s early childhood (EC) education landscape. A veteran early childhood specialist, Dr Lee, provided vital transformational contributions to Kinderland group. Between 1985 – 2014, Dr Lee was Head of Kinderland Curriculum & Training, and a founding member and the First Academic Director of Kinderland Learning Centre (KLC), now known as KLC International Institute (KLCII).

In 1985, Ms Kwan Peck Leng, founder of Kinderland International Education, roped in Dr Lee to spearhead Kinderland’s Curriculum & Training Department. Located in Thomson Plaza, KLC was set up to bolster Dr Lee’s vision and Kinderland’s commitment to training quality EC teachers. Under her stewardship, KLC supported the government’s needs and call for expansion of quality child care teacher training as more mothers return to the workforce.

More than 30 years on, this training arm has grown to become an independent school, KLCII. The School continues to offer early years training and professional development to educarers and preschool teachers in the region.

In 1987, Dr Lee and Ms Jane Ching-Kwan, Kinderland Curriculum Co-ordinator, reviewed and reset the Kinderland kindergarten curriculum approach. This set pace for Singapore’s EC landscape. Kinderland moved from a worksheets-based approach to an exploratory learning approach, pushing Kinderland to be on par with international preschool standards.

Dr Lee played a pivotal role in the development of Singapore’s EC teachers’ training. She connected foreign universities to accreditation with the Ministry of Education and training scholarship with the then Ministry of Community Development. She has left a great legacy that has touched the lives of many preschool educators.

Today, we celebrate the spirit of an education pioneer who has made it her life’s work to contribute to early childhood education. Kinderland holds firm to Dr Lee’s belief that every child is unique, with the potential to stretched to their fullest under the guidance of a quality teacher. We will always remember her for her inextinguishable passion for early childhood education and her values embodied through those lives she has touched and inspired.

We mourn the loss of Dr Florence Lee, who passed away peacefully on 5th September 2021. We thank her for her immense contributions to the education fraternity.

The Benefits of Education

When you have a great education, you have the tools you need to develop creative solutions to problems and discover insights beyond the limited set of solutions already in place. For example, someone working in management might have great deal of expertise in the six traditional approaches to management, but if that manager also has an exceptional education, that manager might also be aware of sociological, organizational, and communication theories that shed different light on the problems of working with individuals in small groups and teams. Applying cross-disciplinary approaches can help to create a more nimble and effective organization that competes better in the global marketplace.

Consequently, we can see that education is the primary way that people today can experience upward mobility, obtain desirable employment, and advance in the workplace. The more we learn, the more we are able to do and to achieve. But this isn’t limited only to the workplace. The same applies in other ventures as well. Even in seemingly unrelated areas such as sports, education is a key to success. Players can’t master their sports without learning about the theory behind them, the history of the game and its rules, and even how competitors play the game. While it may not look the same as the type of classroom education that we associate with schooling, this kind of learning is education as well. Similarly, if you wish to become a pilot of a plane or a boat, you must learn how to operate those machines, and that takes education. Whenever we learn, formally or informally, we are experiencing education. No matter the endeavor, we must learn to succeed.

Team up in our battle against Wuhan virus!
In 2003, the epidemic of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), a strain of coronavirus, infected 8,098 people worldwide with approximately 800 deaths. This has taught everyone a painful lesson about the importance of observing a high level of personal hygiene.

Today, the world is once again shaken by a new strain of the coronavirus – 2019-nCoV (commonly known as the Wuhan virus). Here at Kinderland, stringent precautionary measures have been put in place to ensure that the safety of our children and staff are not compromised.

Some of our stepped-up precautionary measures include:

Daily monitoring of health and conducting temperature screening for all children, staff and visitors
Early detection and isolation of children or staff who are ill, and advising them to seek medical treatment
Children or staff who are unwell must stay at home to rest and can return to school only when they have fully recovered
Parents or visitors, who have fever or display respiratory symptoms (e.g. cough, runny nose) will not be allowed into the centre
Observing a high level of personal hygiene of staff and children
Ensuring good environmental hygiene of the centre
Nevertheless, the battle against this deadly virus is not just ours to fight. We need our team, children and families to stand firm and united to brave through this crisis together. For this to happen, let’s work hand in hand and make personal health and hygiene our priority!
