Walking on the golf course is good for our health. Researches has found that we take about 12,000 – 13,000 steps within an 18 hole game. Meanwhile, WHO (World Health Organization) has recommended to take at least 10,000 steps a day to keep one-self healthy.

Walking is the base of every activity. According to a study in Sweden, the activities it takes on walking within an 18 hole game is equal to 40-70% from the activities it takes for a maximized aerobic activity. Dr. Edward Palank a cardiologist who has been in practiced for more than 20 years stated that walking on the golf course can reduce the bad cholesterol in our blood and stabilize the cholesterol level of our body. The study also showed that for those who drive golf cart within the game has failed to reach the same result.

Research shows that golfer can burn up to 2900 calories within a 36 hole game in a week. This help to improve golfer’s health and reduce the risk of getting coronary heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. This is the reason why golfers in PGA, LPGA as well as European Tour are “obligated” to walk through the whole game with a caddie but not driving a golf cart. It is hard to find any of them who died of a heart attack, stroke or cancer.

Gary Player, as an example, who is 79 years old. He jogs and workouts 3 to 5 times in a week. His body condition and flexibility stays in his middle age. He still performs an important role in some television show such as the technical advisor of Golf Channel Academy.
