Just like minim note, minim rest worth the value of 2 beats (in common time). Simply speaking, this means that for the duration of two beats, no note should be played.

It can also be interpreted as ‘half rest’, where ‘half’ refers to half of the whole bar value.

Rest notation in a music sheet indicates the absence of sound. It tells us the interval of silences in a piece of music.

Music rests only affect the staff in which they occur; a rest in the bass staff won’t affect the treble staff, and vice versa.

Each rest symbol and name corresponds with a particular note value. Keep an eye on our upcoming posts for rest names and values 😉

Most of your piano teachers would definitely agree on this one. All kinds of teaching tools has been used for getting this particular technique right - holding a ball, imagine you tiptoe on the keys, any the list goes on. If you’re wondering why we care so much about having a rounded-hand shape, here’s why:

1. Curving your fingers when playing the piano allows your hands to be flexible enough to rotate in the direction that you are aiming.

2. When your fingers are straight and flat as you play the piano, you're actually causing tension in your hand and arm muscles because it takes more effort to keep your fingers straight, than curved.

3. When our fingers are curved, we can move up and down the keyboard much faster than when they are straight. This is especially helpful when we’renplaying scallic passages.

Posture is very important for any musician when playing an instrument. For pianists, good posture ensures you have the maximum level of flexibility to reach all the keys, and it also helps you learn the proper technique for striking the keys.

See the below picture as an example of a good piano playing posture. Quick tips, make sure your stool/chair height is adjusted to a good height, relative to your piano keys. And most impotantly, don’t slouch.

The musical stave or staff, is analogous to a mathematical graph of pitch with respect to time. Pitches of notes are given by their vertical position on the staff and notes are played from left to right.

The lines and spaces are numbered from bottom to top. Appropriate music symbols, depending on the intended effect, are placed on the staff according to their corresponding pitch or function.

The absolute pitch of each line of a non-percussive staff is indicated by the placement of a clef symbol at the appropriate vertical position on the left-hand side of the staff - possibly modified by conventions for specific instruments.

In traditional music theory, most countries in the world use the solfège naming convention Do–Re–Mi–Fa–Sol–La–Si, including for instance Italy, Portugal, Spain, France, Romania, most Latin American countries, Greece, Albania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Russia, and all the Arabic-speaking or Persian-speaking countries.
⠀⠀
However, in English and Dutch speaking regions, pitch classes are typically represented by the first seven letters of the Latin alphabet, arranged as the following: C D E F G A B.
