10 Beliefs About Learning
One of my goals this year is to strive to have the information in my newsletter articles be more than general information about events at school and more focused upon teaching and learning. I plan to share more specific information that hopefully will be helpful and provoke parents to think about their child's educational program.
In thinking about where to start I thought their might be value in identifying what many educators believe to be core beliefs about learning that we embrace at ISH as well. So below are 10 simple statements that hopefully cause you to ask yourself, Do I share this belief?

Not in order of priority the 10 are:
1. Learning is not best measured by a letter grade or a number.
2. The process of learning is more important than the product.
3. Failure is not the end, but only a brief stop along the journey of learning.
4. The responsibility for a child’s learning is a partnership between the school, student and parents.
5. Although important remember your child’s perspective is the not the only one.
6. Learning looks much different than when you and I went to school.
7. It is more important to focus on your child’s successes rather than their shortcomings.
8. The internet although full of inappropriate content is also a valuable learning tool.
9. Students should be an active participant in the discussions that parents have with teachers regarding their learning.
10. The role of homework in learning is simply to reinforce concepts.

Letters from Aceh
"Letters from Aceh" is a collection of letters and photographs (by Scott Graham and Piotr Jakubowski) exchanged between students from the tsunami-devastated Aceh province, and children from international destinations.
It includes forewords written by the Indonesian President, Dr Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the headmaster of the Jakarkta International School in Indonesia, Dr Niall C. W. Nelson and the Director for The Rehabiltation and Construction Agency for Aceh and Nias, Kuntoro Mangkusubroto.
