😴 Safety Tip: Managing Fatigue on Shift, What Actually Works

Fatigue is consistently identified as a major risk factor in offshore and industrial incidents. Here are the evidence-based strategies that are most effective for managing fatigue across extended rotation patterns:

☀️ LIGHT MANAGEMENT
Natural light exposure in the morning anchors your circadian rhythm. On night shifts, manage light exposure, bright light during work, and minimize light (including screens) in the 90 minutes before sleep.

💤 PRIORITIZE SLEEP QUALITY OVER QUANTITY
6 hours of uninterrupted sleep is more restorative than 8 hours of fragmented sleep. Earplugs, blackout curtains in cabins, and consistent sleep timing all matter significantly.

🍽️ NUTRITION TIMING
Heavy meals before night shift work impair alertness. Lighter, more frequent meals during extended shifts maintain more consistent energy levels.

🧠 PEAK ALERTNESS TIMING
Most people have peak cognitive performance between 2–4 hours after waking. Schedule high-consequence tasks during this window when possible.

🛑 RECOGNIZE THE SIGNS
In colleagues: excessive yawning, microsleeps, irritability, slow responses. In yourself: difficulty concentrating, poor memory, emotional instability. These are symptoms, not character flaws.
