Gardening is more than planting, it’s understanding.
As students transplant seedlings into garden beds, they begin to explore the living world beneath their feet, discovering that soil is not just dirt, but a thriving ecosystem full of life. From microorganisms to insects, every element plays a role in supporting healthy plant growth.

Through this hands-on experience, they learn that caring for the environment isn’t separate from growing food, it’s essential to it. A balanced ecosystem helps plants flourish naturally, reducing pests and strengthening resilience without the need for harmful interventions.

Through project-based learning, students take ownership of the entire process, from preparing the soil to nurturing each plant. They don’t just study nature, they observe it, work with it, and become part of it.

This is learning that grows with them, rooted in curiosity, responsibility, and real-world connection.

Our students turned their creativity into compassion, baking their own treats and selling them to raise funds for a local dog shelter.

Through this hands-on experience, they’re not only learning practical skills, but also discovering the power of kindness, responsibility, and community action.

At Woodschool, this kind of real-world learning has always been part of our journey. Today, we’re proud to continue that commitment through our collaboration with Bali Animal Welfare Association ( ).

Our students explored how to safely and kindly interact with dogs, especially when meeting unfamiliar ones on the street. Through awareness, empathy, and practical knowledge, they learn not just to stay safe, but to respect and care for all living beings.

Because education isn’t just about knowledge, it’s about compassion in action.

Weeks of planning, building, and teamwork came to life as our students proudly paraded their handmade ogoh-ogoh to welcome Nyepi. More than a celebration, this was project-based learning in action, blending culture, creativity, collaboration, and confidence.

Before visiting the local market to buy ingredients for our plant-based cooking class, our students practiced addition and multiplication using prop money. They calculated totals, planned their spending, discussed budgets, and even made decisions together about what they could and couldn’t afford.

This is more than a math exercise.
It’s financial literacy.
It’s problem-solving.
It’s teamwork.
It’s preparation for real life.

By the time they step into the market, they’re not just students, they’re thoughtful buyers, confident decision-makers, and active learners.

Because when children understand why they are learning something, the lesson stays with them

Who says learning only happens inside four walls?

At our school, the classroom is not confined by a roof or surrounded by walls. It extends into the garden, the field, the soil beneath their feet, and the sky above their heads. Because children are not meant to sit still all day, they are meant to explore, question, build, observe, and experience.

Through project-based and hands-on learning, students connect directly with the world around them. They measure while planting, problem-solve while building, collaborate while exploring, and develop resilience through real experiences.

Nature becomes their laboratory. The garden becomes their classroom. The field becomes their space for discovery.

When children learn by doing, the lessons stay with them far beyond the school day.

Because education isn’t just about where they sit, it’s about how deeply they engage.

During break time, when children are free to rest, play, or simply explore, an idea emerged.

“Can we build a small tree house?”

What followed was entirely initiated by them.
They planned, measured, lifted, tied, adjusted, and solved problems together. With the teacher guiding and ensuring safety, the children led the process from start to finish, even decorating their structure with their own creative touches.

This is the beauty of giving children space.

When time is unstructured, imagination expands.
When ideas are respected, initiative grows.

What began as a simple break became a powerful moment of project-based learning, filled with collaboration, resilience, creativity, and confidence.

Sometimes, the most meaningful learning happens when it isn’t scheduled at all

Today was one of those lessons you can’t rush.
Our students worked with natural indigo dye, learning how blue comes from plants and how color slowly appears with time and air.

When the shirts first came out of the dye, they weren’t blue yet. They looked greenish, unexpected. The children paused, watched, and waited. As the fabric met the air, the color gently changed, green turning into blue, deeper with every dip.

Their hands turned blue too, and that was part of the learning. This was hands-on learning in the truest sense: touching, observing, being patient, and trusting the process. No worksheets, no quick results , just real understanding built through experience.
