"The meaning of intangible heritage"
Heritage is often understood as something static from the past that has always existed. The concept of intangible heritage has been developed to counter this fixed idea of heritage. What is intangible heritage and to what extent does intangible heritage actually balance the static idea of tangible heritage? In other words, how meaningful is the concept of intangible heritage? Dr. Sadiah Boonstra will address these questions through a discussion of the history of the concepts of tangible and intangible heritage. She will discuss the emergence of the concept of heritage in 19th century Europe, which was institutionalized in the 20th century. Since 1972 UNESCO’s concept of World Heritage has become the gold-standard for heritage discourse, including its recent development of the concept of intangible heritage. A historical approach to heritage allows for uncovering politically imbued discourses with roots in colonial pasts that underlie the development of the concepts of tangible and intangible heritage.

Dr. Sadiah Boonstra is historian and curator. Her PhD from VU University, Amsterdam, dealt with heritage formation and wayang performance practices in colonial and postcolonial Indonesia. In 2013 she was Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia University, New York. Since 2005 she curated exhibitions at the Tropenmuseum, National Prison Museum, NiNsee in the Netherlands, the Municipal Art Gallery, Thessaloniki, Greece, and Erasmus Huis, Jakarta.
