Why has Indonesia’s vast labor force struggled to turn collective grievance into electoral power?
At the latest FOSS Brownbag Series, political sociologist Aniello Iannone presented his compelling research: "Lordly Capitalism in Indonesia: Oligarchy, Labour, and the Contradictions of Post-Reformasi Politics."
By analyzing the 2024 trajectory of Partai Buruh, Iannone challenged us to look at how oligarchic power persists not just through force, but through the production of moral consent. It’s a necessary theoretical shift in how we view the Global South.
"The emancipation of labor is stalled not just by external pressure, but by a system of 'Lordly Capitalism' that successfully weaves its dominance into the social and moral fabric of the precariat." - Aniello Iannone
