The Indonesian government is actively drafting a bill to redenominate the rupiah, with completion expected by 2027. This legislation is outlined in the Finance Ministry's strategic programs for the 2025โ2029 period, as specified in Finance Minister Regulation No. 70 of 2025.
The proposed bill advocates for the removal of three zeros from rupiah denominations, ensuring that purchasing power remains unaffected. For example, a Rp 1,000 note would convert to a Rp 1 note following redenomination, while the actual value of goods and services would stay consistent.
According to the regulation, the redenomination aims to enhance economic efficiency, strengthen the competitive edge of the currency, and sustain growth momentum. It is also anticipated to stabilize the rupiah's value, uphold purchasing power, and increase the currency's credibility on both national and international fronts.
The initiative to remove zeros from the rupiah has been a persistent goal across various administrations. In 2023, Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo expressed the central bank's readiness to assist with the implementation of this policy, emphasizing the need for a cautious approach that takes both economic and political stability into account.
Previously, in 2017, former Deputy Governor Mirza Adityaswara indicated that the redenomination process could require up to a decade and emphasized the importance of public education to mitigate confusion surrounding the transition and preserve confidence in the currency's value.
