Hacking Cough and Laryngitis: Symptoms to Know
Laryngitis is a disease that causes not only hacking cough fits, but also other specific symptoms that affect the throat and windpipe. Laryngitis symptoms can be similar to cold and flu, but more severe, and the most severe form can actually be life-threatening if not treated quickly. Once you know the symptoms, it is best to consult the doctor immediately, as laryngitis can be dangerous for both adults and kids.
Hacking Cough and Other Laryngitis Symptoms
There are several common symptoms of laryngitis, and many affect the windpipe and throat, such as:
Hacking, dry cough that happens incessantly.
Dried, sore throat.
Hoarse voice that leads to weak and even lost voice.
Raw and tickling sensation in the throat.
High pitching noise when breathing.
These are symptoms obvious to adults, especially the dry, hacking cough fits. However, if the same thing happens to children and toddlers, the symptoms are usually a bit different. Instead of loud hacking cough fits, children usually display symptoms such as breathing difficulties accompanied with wheezing sounds.
Time to See Doctor
Most people think that they can wait until the laryngitis goes away, with plenty of rest, drinking much fluid and avoiding foods that can irritate the throat. However, sometimes the condition is more than just lost voice and hacking cough. Be aware if these symptoms happen without ceasing for 2 weeks; see the doctor to avoid having your vocal cord ruined. However, in case of children, make sure you bring them to the doctor if they show symptoms like high fever, feel hard to breathe, and cannot swallow well.
Laryngitis might be started with ‘normal’ coughing fits, but sometimes they indicate something more serious. Some hacking cough fits indicate more severe problems than others, so make sure you know when to see the doctor.
