🇭🇺 Mohács 500 | 1526–2026
1526. augusztus 29-én zajlott a mohácsi csata. A küzdelem alig néhány órán át tartott, emlékezete azonban immár ötszáz éve velünk él.
A ReCall projektben azt vizsgáltuk, hogyan válnak történelmi események a kollektív emlékezet részévé. Mohács ennek egyik legerősebb magyar példája.
Ötszáz évvel Mohács után: miért nem tudjuk még mindig „sem lenyelni, sem kiköpni”?

The Battle of Mohács was fought on 29 August 1526. The battle itself lasted only a few hours, yet its memory has remained with us for five hundred years.
The ReCall Project explored how historical events become part of collective memory. Mohács is one of the most powerful Hungarian examples.
Five hundred years after Mohács: why are we still unable “either to swallow it or to spit it out”?

🇪🇺 ReCall Project – Lecture recap from Budapest

Today at Eötvös Loránd University, our Czech doctoral researcher Vojtěch Slouka delivered a fascinating lecture on medieval power struggles in Central Europe:

📚 “History of failures. Unsuccessful candidacies for the throne in Bohemia, Hungary and Poland in the long 12th Century”

🔍 Instead of focusing on kings who succeeded, the lecture turned the perspective around—examining those who failed to gain or keep the throne, and asking: why did they fail?

💡 The key insight: medieval succession was not governed by fixed rules, but by a complex interaction of three dimensions:

- Competence – who had the right to influence or decide succession (elites, dynasties, Church, external powers like the Empire or Byzantium)
- Procedure – elections, oaths, coronations, and ritualized political actions
- Argumentation – how claims were justified and later narrated in historical sources

⚔️ Through examples from the Árpád, Přemyslid, and Piast dynasties, the lecture showed that failure often resulted from:

- lack of elite support
- mistimed political action (being in the wrong place at the wrong time)
- dynastic conflicts and competing candidates
- external interventions or shifting alliances

📖 A particularly important takeaway: our knowledge of these events is shaped by narrative sources, which often reflect the perspective of the winners—meaning that failure itself is also a constructed historical category.

🌍 The lecture highlighted how comparing Bohemia, Hungary, and Poland helps us better understand the shared yet diverse political cultures of medieval Central Europe.

We are proud to announce that István Kovács, a key member of our project, took part in an important international meeting in Bratislava! 🇭🇺🇸🇰

On 30 March 2026, a key consultation between the National Heritage Institute of Hungary and the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of Slovakia marked an important step forward in shaping the international dimension of the Mohács 500 project.

With the participation of István Kovács, the discussion focused on how to present Central Europe’s shared historical memory together—including a joint commemoration of the fallen heroes of the Battle of Mohács. The meeting was hosted by Ambassador Csaba Balogh in Bratislava. The Hungarian delegation introduced the ongoing developments at the Mohács National Memorial Site, which received strong commitment and support from the Slovak side.

The takeaway is clear:
👉 Mohács is not just a date—it is a shared Central European memory and a cornerstone of our common identity.

⏳ Less than 150 days to go until the 500th anniversary.

We are pleased to recommend the lecture of our project collaborator, Péter B. Kovács, taking place in Wrocław.

The lecture explores a key period of Central European history – the Investiture Controversy – with a particular focus on patterns of episcopal conflict management and political communication.

"Od konfrontacji do kompromisu. Wzorce zarządzania konfliktami przez środkowoeuropejskich biskupów w dobie sporu o inwestyturę"

👉 Okres reform kościelnych i sporu o inwestyturę zasadniczo przekształcił relacje między władzą świecką a kościelną. Referat dotyczy Europy Środkowej przełomu XI i XII wieku ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem sposobów zarządzania konfliktami przez biskupów. Punktem wyjścia jest pytanie, jak źródła narracyjne przedstawiają konflikty między biskupami a władcami oraz jakie strategie komunikacyjne z nich wynikają.

👉 Analiza trzech studiów przypadku ukazuje spektrum postaw biskupich: od otwartej konfrontacji (św. Stanisław i Bolesław II; Jaromir i Wratysław II), przez polityczne przegrupowanie, po mediację (biskup Dezső jako rzecznik pokoju i stabilizacji).

👉 Péter B. Kovács jest doktorantem na Wydziale Humanistycznym Uniwersytetu im. Loránda Eötvösa (ELTE). Jest historykiem specjalizującym się w dziejach średniowiecznej Europy Środkowej. Aktywnie uczestniczył w realizacji międzynarodowego projektu Erasmus+ ReCall, a obecnie pełni funkcję dyrektora operacyjnego przygotowywanego projektu UNIDICE. Projekty te opierają się na ścisłej współpracy między ELTE, Uniwersytetem Wrocławskim oraz Uniwersytetem Masaryka w Brnie. Jego badania koncentrują się na komunikacji, konfliktach kościelnych oraz źródłach narracyjnych XI i XII wieku, przy szerszym zainteresowaniu historią myśli politycznej oraz dynamiką polityki pamięci zarówno w średniowieczu, jak i w czasach nowożytnych.
