📣🕵️ Do societies realise its importance? If not society as a whole, journalists and fact-checkers certainly do realise. Debunking “is crucial”. “Democracy in general is in danger”, believes Fernando Esteves, Polígrafo, the Portuguese fact-checking website. As part of the Newsreel2 project, senior journalists and editors from five countries (Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Portugal and Romania) were interviewed on the specifics of the debunking activities in their countries, risks associated with the process, training and education programmes related to the field. Journalists play a crucial role in understanding the dynamics of their societies and can provide a clue about the debunking need and on how it is perceived by the audiences.

"Social media are only partly to blame for the spread of fake news, and the direct access to fake news websites is limited between 1% and a maximum of 10% of the online public.
Thus, despite the limited exposure, some fake news received a wide attention and benefit from an important level of public trust (Tsfati et alii, 2020). People hear about the fake news, but they don’t know or see the original publication, so traditional media is responsible for fake news getting into the public’s attention."

"Nevertheless, in the case of AI, it might be the case that the future of regulation and self-regulation is already here. Content Authenticity Initiative, a coalition founded in 2019 around Adobe that now has more than 1 000 members, announced on April 3rd enhanced technical support for users and for content creators. This support, based on open-source tools, includes improved metadata on ‘AI-generated ingredients’, and ‘do not train’ commands for content creators that want to keep AI away from their audio-visual products."

The project team also organized the last transnational project meeting on 31st March at the ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon to evaluate the project and discuss the remaining tasks. This was the last occasion for the members to meet in person in the framework of NEWSREEL2. However, we really hope that we can continue our work in an upcoming project in the near future!

The final multiplier event of the NEWSREEL2 project was held at the ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon on 30th March! 🎉

During the first half of the conference, the project members introduced the e-learning & teaching materials they developed together in the framework of the three-year project.

The programme was opened by Ana Pinto Martinho & Miguel Crespo from the ISCTE. After that Annamária Torbó (University of Pécs) introduced the main results of NEWSREEL2. During the section, partners presented six from the nine professional fields and the developed materials, including the recently published teaching guides connected to each field.

Antonia Matei & Raluca Radu (University of Bucharest) talked about the materials on verifying and analysing fake news & debunking disinformation. Klára Smejkal (Masaryk University) presented the field of improving democratic sensibility, and Rita Glózer (University of Pécs) focused on storytelling in social media. Dominik Speck (Erich Brost Institue) concentrated on the field of foreign coverage, while AI & Journalism was introduced by Ana Pinto Martinho (ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon).

The central field of the event was the connection of Artificial Intelligence and journalism, therefore Nic Newman from the Reuters Institute held an awareness-raising keynote presentation about the threats and opportunities. Furthermore, the audience could hear two interesting round-table discussions with journalism educators and journalists.

Thank you for all of the participants who contributed to the successful implementation of the conference. We are especially grateful to Ana Pinto Martinho, Miguel Crespo & the students of the ISCTE for organizing such a wonderful final event!

Informed by the centuries-old tradition of newspaper illustrations, but mainly reflecting the generic characteristics of the autobiographic graphic novel, comics reportage developed at the intersection of journalistic practice and comics drawing. The genre became popular in both the North American Comics, and Francophone bande dessinée. The NEWSREEL article written by Gyula Maksa describes the (trans)media genre of comics reportage and some of the frontiers of the phenomenon. ✏️🦸
