Video games are remarkably good at keeping players engaged and constantly challenged, while giving them abundant opportunities to use English. What can language teachers learn from games, then? This talk explores how games support learning through meaningful input, flow experiences, and interaction with others in low-stakes environments. I will also consider how these principles can deepen our understanding of learner motivation and help us level up our teaching by drawing on students' out-of-class experiences.

Never before has language education faced such a dramatic paradigm shift as we are witnessing at present. Technology is developing at a rapid rate leaving educators reeling and experts conflicted about the potential threats and benefits for individuals and society at large. However, one thing remains certain in these volatile times. Language education is at its heart about people, about human interaction, about connection, about caring, and about finding meaning in how we work with and use language with others in and beyond the classroom. In this talk, I will revisit notions of humanism from the 1970s and 1980s and explain why I feel there are lessons to be drawn for the present. I will then suggest how we can take these ideas to ‘the next level’ for contemporary times and consider one way to place humanity and relationships at the centre of our practice: Compassion-based language education. I will define what it is, give concrete examples of how it may look in practice, and offer various possible pathways through which to become a more compassion-based language educator.
