At this year’s WoLaLa conference, two of our colleagues took part not only as organizers but also as speakers. One of them, Réka Dodé, presented our joint research in the Thursday afternoon session:

The talk showcased how large language models can be used to automatically classify Hungarian scientific texts by field of science. The results are very promising: fine-tuned ModernBERT and ChatPuli both reached 86% accuracy in an 11-label classification task, while Llama 3.3 achieved 91% accuracy.

Az előadás azt mutatta be, hogyan használhatók a nagy nyelvmodellek a magyar nyelvű tudományos szövegek automatikus tudományterületi besorolására. Az eredmények kifejezetten ígéretesek: a finomhangolt ModernBERT és ChatPuli modellek 86% pontosságot értek el egy 11 címkés osztályozási feladatban, míg a Llama 3.3 modell 91% pontosságot tudott elérni.

We’re thrilled to announce Prof. András Kornai, senior scientific advisor at the HUN-REN Institute for Computer Science and Control and professor at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, as our third keynote speaker.
📘 Prof. Kornai earned his mathematics degree at Eötvös Loránd University under Miklós Ajtai, and his linguistics degree at Stanford University under Paul Kiparsky. His work spans the full mathematical spectrum of natural language processing, speech recognition, and OCR, and he continues to be one of the most influential figures shaping Hungarian and international computational linguistics.

Introducing our colleague, Ferenczi Gergő Gábor✨

💻 I first sat in front of a computer at the age of 8, and by 10 I was already programming. Since childhood, I’ve known that I wanted to work in IT – and that I would let machines handle whatever could be automated.
🎓 I graduated as a computer engineer from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Debrecen, where I first encountered artificial intelligence nearly 20 years ago. I was fascinated by the concept of artificial neural networks and became convinced that this would be the future.
🛰️ Since then, I have worked in the telecommunications sector, at internet service providers, IT companies, and in academic environments.
🔬 In 2021, I joined the Language Technology Research Group at the Research Centre for Linguistics, where my main responsibility is operating the supercomputers, servers, and applications that support research activities.
🧠 Since 2022 – in addition to my previous responsibilities – I have been leading the institution’s IT team and contributing to data engineering tasks, corpus development, and the continuous improvement of our language technology infrastructure.
⚙️ I believe that behind every well-built system there is not only code, but also a mindset – and that scientific research truly thrives when the technical foundations receive as much attention as the theory itself.

Bemutatkozik kollégánk, Ferenczi Gergő Gábor ✨

💻 8 évesen ültem először számítógép elé, és 10 évesen már programoztam. Gyerekkorom óta tudtam, hogy informatikával szeretnék foglalkozni – és hogy amit lehet, azt gépekre fogom bízni.
🎓 Mérnök-informatikusként végeztem a Debreceni Egyetem Műszaki Főiskolai Karán, ahol közel 20 évvel ezelőtt találkoztam először a mesterséges intelligenciával. Már akkor lenyűgözött a mesterséges neurális hálózatok modellje, és meggyőződésem volt: ez lesz a jövő.
🛰️ Azóta dolgoztam a telekommunikációs szektorban, internetszolgáltatóknál, informatikai vállalkozásoknál, és egyetemi környezetben is.
🔬 2021-ben csatlakoztam a Nyelvtudományi Kutatóközpont Nyelvtechnológiai Kutatócsoportjához, ahol a kutatásokat támogató szuperszámítógépek, szerverek és alkalmazások üzemeltetése a fő feladatom.
🧠 2022 óta – korábbi feladataim megtartása mellett – az intézmény informatikai csoportját is vezetem, valamint részt veszek adatmérnöki munkákban, korpuszépítésben és a nyelvtechnológiai infrastruktúra folyamatos fejlesztésében.
⚙️ Hiszek abban, hogy a jól megépített rendszerek mögött nem csak kód, hanem szemlélet is van – és hogy a tudományos kutatás akkor működik igazán, ha a háttértechnikára is ugyanannyi figyelem jut, mint az elméletre.
