Building and Strengthening Partnerships in Portugal 🇵🇹

➡ Members of the faculty staff – Dr. Rita Hoffmann, Dr. Maria Flamich (Institute for Disability and Social Participation), Dr. Judit Gombás (Institute for the Methodology of Special Needs Education and Rehabilitation), and Gréta Kövecses (International Office) – travelled to Portugal during the last week of June 2026, where they met with colleagues from two local higher education institutions. 🌍

The report can be read here: https://barczi.elte.hu/en/from-lisbon-to-porto-building-and-strengthening-partnerships-in-portugal

The photograph shows a spacious courtyard paved with light grey cobblestones. On the right-hand side of the foreground, four women are standing side by side, looking towards the camera. From left to right: the first woman is wearing an olive-green, short-sleeved jumpsuit, black sandals and sunglasses; the second is wearing a light blue, patterned summer dress; the third is wearing a black top and black trousers with a floral-patterned hem; the fourth is seen wearing a black dress and black sandals. They are all posing with relaxed postures.

In the background, a modern, white building with a tall, slender tower rises towards the sky. The building is surrounded by a tall, pointed metal fence. Next to the tower stand three flagpoles: one flies a rainbow-coloured flag, the second the Portuguese national flag, whilst the third flag is light in colour and barely visible due to the lack of wind.

New Publication in the Journal Cortex📖
🔵 A study by Dr. Lilla Zakariás and her research team has been published in the special issue of Cortextitled “Language Disorders in Understudied Languages.”

🔵 The title of the paper is “Language Recovery in Hungarian Speakers with Aphasia: Roles of Phonology and Intraindividual Variability.”

🔵 During the study, researchers followed individuals with post-stroke aphasia for more than a year to explore the cognitive and linguistic factors influencing language recovery. The results showed that, in addition to initial aphasia severity, the ability to process phonology plays a significant role in the extent of language recovery.

🔵 This study is the first Hungarian longitudinal study among individuals with aphasia, as well as the first research to examine the role of intra-individual variability in post-stroke language recovery. The results also highlight that a detailed examination of phonological processes may be of particular importance not only for diagnosis but also for prognosis.

The publication is available directly at: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0010945226001656?fbclid=IwY2xjawTFg95leHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFXaDliN1JJVXBLTEIwQ3Rac3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHmC_bl5gcwD2N90sKD8aVA-Fy64sutvfHa0YENTRLrebo8s43KDriO_Ls3s1_aem_RADh7M46gBlwnss85tGc0w

📚 Faces of Bárczi

In our last “Did You Know This About Me?” post before summer break, the focus is on travel. 🧳

Dr. Csilla Cserti-Szauer, an assistant professor at the Institute for General Theory of Special Needs Education, talks about the joy of discovery. 🌍

“Travel has given me so much since I was a child: I’ve been to many places with my grandfather, my parents, and my sister, and later through my international work as well. Among my fondest moments are those when my husband and I can wander around Portugal, a place that is especially dear to us.”
