🔎 Discoveries from the ELTE Faculty of Humanities: From Roman Altars to Volga Myths
📚 In “Reconsidered Altars at the Customs Station,” Dr. Melinda Szabó (Institute of Archaeological Sciences) explores the Roman Empire’s customs stations through fragmentary inscriptions—revealing stories of slaves-turned-station-chiefs and their roles in the imperial bureaucracy. 🏛️
🌙 In “Sun-Eater, Moon-Swallower,” Dr. Edina Dallos (Department of Turkic Studies) presents a detailed encyclopedia of mythical beings from the Volga region’s Turkic-speaking peoples. This richly illustrated volume sheds light on centuries-old beliefs shaped by Orthodoxy, Islam, and folk traditions. 🌞🐉

🐶 Are Dogs the New Children? 🍼 |
Are people choosing dogs over children? 📉👶 As fertility rates decline and pet ownership rises, Professor Enikő Kubinyi from ELTE’s Department of Ethology proposes a new theory in Current Directions in Psychological Science.
🔬 Her research suggests that the growing emotional bond with dogs isn’t replacing parenthood but is a response to weakening social support systems. With fewer community childcare networks, people may turn to pets for companionship and emotional fulfillment.
🐕🦺 Some see dogs as "practice children," while others form deep emotional attachments, sometimes prioritizing their pets over human relationships.
💡 The study explores the complex role of dogs in modern society and their impact on human behavior. Could strengthening family support reduce this trend? Let us know your thoughts!

✍ "For the longest time, I believed that some people were just naturally great at academic writing while others struggled. I used to think, “I’m just not a research person”. But once I started seeing mistakes as part of the learning process rather than proof that I wasn’t good enough, everything changed. Instead of giving up when I struggled with a difficult section, I started telling myself, “Okay, this is just something I haven’t mastered yet.” That little word—yet—makes a huge difference when you’re tackling something as big as a thesis."
