The Torah tells us the Jewish people left Egypt in Chodesch Haaviv, the month of spring. Not by coincidence. The Jewish calendar is set to make sure, that the month of Nissan and the holiday of Pesach is always a “month of spring”.

Rashi, the famous medieval Jewish commentator, teaches us that God’s taking the Jewish people out of Egypt in the spring was an unmatched chesed (kindness), when it was not too cold and not too hot — the perfect moment to leave.

There’s an important distinction the rabbis make: Rachmanut is compassion, feeling another’s pain. But chesed is going beyond our own limits to lift someone else. After 210 years of slavery, God chose kindness, not just mercy.

This Pesach, may we all be inspired to go beyond simple compassion and offer true chesed — to our families, our communities, and the world around us, and act to our fellow humans with true kindness, just as God did as he took the Jewish people out of Egypt in the month of spring.
