The Hungarian Language School was one of the first language schools in Budapest to specialise exclusively in teaching Hungarian as a foreign language. We are a truly international school, where people from 80 countries in 5 continents have come to learn Hungarian. Since we opened, we have welcomed more than 9,000 foreign students to our school, each one of whom has their own reasons for wanting to learn Hungarian. HLS takes into account the peculiarities of the Hungarian language and combines modern, communication-based learning methods with traditional teaching tools. Our school is in a historic, listed building located in the heart of Budapest's atmospheric university and cultural quarter, just across the road from the National Museum. Our Mission

The Hungarian Language School would like as many people as possible to be able to get to know and use the Hungarian language, and aims to provide the highest level of language training for foreigners arriving in Hungary. Our mission is to help our students master the Hungarian language quickly and effectively, using the best teachers and the latest teaching methods. At the same time we also aim to make our lessons as enjoyable as possible . Our lessons will prepare you for all kinds of everyday situations. These include going shopping, getting around town and getting to know people, as well as dealing with various situations at home and at work or filling in official forms. Of course, we want your course at HLS to be both useful and practical, but we also want you to enjoy your time with us and have a memorable experience, and with that in mind we regularly organise cultural activities or excursions as part of your course. You’ll get regular breaks between lessons, where you’ll be able to get to know your teachers and fellow students a bit better over a cup of tea, as well as having a well-earned rest! We look forward to welcoming you to our school!

Ezek a kifejezések talán nem mindig szerepelnek a tankönyvekben, mégis nagyon hasznosak, ha szeretnél természetesebben kommunikálni magyarul.

These expressions may not always appear in textbooks, but they are very useful if you want to communicate more naturally in Hungarian.

🇭🇺 Mi történik, amikor magyarul kell elmondanod az orvosnak, hogy mi a baj? 🩺

Ebben a videóban egy rövid orvos–beteg beszélgetést mutatunk be, kifejezetten kezdő magyarul tanulóknak. 👩‍⚕️🗣️ Hasznos mondatokat és kifejezéseket hallhatsz, amelyeket egy orvosi vizsgálat során valóban használhatsz.

🇭🇺 Ez a vicces szituáció is egy tanórán történt. 😄

Éppen a „hall” igét magyaráztam, és azt próbáltam szemléltetni, hogy miért két „l” van benne: mert két fülünk van. 👂👂

Erre érkezett a teljesen jogos kérdés: „És mi van, ha csak egy l-lel mondjuk / látjuk?” 🤔

Nos… akkor már egészen mást jelent. 😅 A „hal” jelentheti azt, hogy valaki meghal 💀, de természetesen a hal mint állat is ezt jelenti. 🐟

Ráadásul éppen ott volt egy finn diákom is, és kiderült, hogy a finn nyelvben is van egy hasonló érdekesség. 🇫🇮

Így egy egyszerű magyarázatból hirtelen lett egy sokkal bonyolultabb magyarázat, egy kis nyelvészeti kitérő és még néhány extra magyar szó is. 😂📚

Néha egy kérdésből lesz a legjobb tananyag!

🇬🇧 This funny situation also happened during one of our lessons. 😄

I was explaining the Hungarian verb “hall” (to hear) and wanted to demonstrate why it has two “l”s: because we have two ears. 👂👂

Then came a perfectly reasonable question: “And what happens if we use only one l?” 🤔

Well… then it means something completely different. 😅 “Hal” can mean that someone dies 💀, but it also means fish. 🐟

And we happened to have a Finnish student in the class, who pointed out that there is a similar kind of coincidence in Finnish too. 🇫🇮

So what started as a simple explanation suddenly turned into a much more complicated explanation, a little linguistic detour, and some extra Hungarian vocabulary. 😂📚

Sometimes one question creates the best lesson!

🇭🇺 A tartalmaink között gyakran találkozhattok kezdőknek szóló videókkal és kezdő csoportjainkkal, ezért most szerettünk volna egy kicsit haladóbb problémát is megmutatni. 😄

Ez a vicces helyzet egy magánórán történt, ahol egy orvostanhallgatót tanítottunk magyarul írni. ✍️🇭🇺 A videóban azt mutatjuk meg, milyen nehézségekkel találkozhat egy haladóbb tanuló, amikor már nemcsak beszélni, hanem helyesen írni is szeretne magyarul.

Természetesen a diákunk hozzájárult ahhoz, hogy ezt a vicces karikatúrát megosszuk veletek. 😊

Mert a magyar nyelvtanulásnak vannak olyan pillanatai, amikor már csak nevetni lehet rajta. 😅📚

This funny situation actually happened during a private lesson, where we were teaching a medical student how to write in Hungarian. ✍️🇭🇺 The video shows some of the difficulties an advanced learner can face when they want to improve not only their spoken Hungarian, but also their writing.

Of course, our student gave us permission to turn the situation into this funny cartoon-style video and share it with you. 😊

Because sometimes learning Hungarian gets difficult enough that all you can do is laugh about it! 😅📚

🇭🇺 Ez a történet egy haladó kurzusunkon történt, és még engem is elgondolkodtatott. 😄
Az egyik diákom mesélte, hogy a gyerekei Magyarországon járnak óvodába, ezért gyakran ír a többi szülővel e-mailben vagy WhatsApp-csoportban. Bár már nagyon sok mindent megért magyarul, néha a biztonság kedvéért fordítót is használ.
Egy alkalommal azonban nem értette, mit jelent egy üzenet végén ez: „dirt” + egy keresztnév. 🤔
Bevallom, elsőre én sem értettem… Aztán amikor elmagyarázta a helyzetet, rögtön leesett, mi történt. 😅

One of my students told me that their children go to kindergarten in Hungary, so they often communicate with other parents by email or in WhatsApp groups. Although they understand Hungarian quite well, they sometimes use a translator just to be on the safe side.
One day, they couldn't figure out why a message ended with "dirt" + a first name. 🤔
To be honest, I didn't understand it at first either… But once they explained the situation, it all made sense. 😅
