🖐️ Did you know that the Hungarian word for “thumb” has a fascinating history? 🏹🇭🇺

In today’s video, we’re learning the names of all five fingers in Hungarian!

But pay attention! Hüvely and hüvelyk are NOT the same word! 👀

👉 Hüvely means sheath, casing, pod, or protective covering. It can also mean va**na in anatomical terminology.

👉 Hüvelyk is a diminutive form that likely originally referred to a protective thumb ring used by Hungarian archers around the time of the Hungarian Conquest (Honfoglalás - late 9th century).
📏 Here’s another fun fact! In Hungarian, hüvelyk also means inch (2.54 cm)! The distance from the tip of your thumb to its first joint is roughly one inch, which helps explain the connection between the thumb and this traditional unit of measurement.

Who knew that something as simple as a finger could reveal so much about Hungarian history? 😄
