🌍Hogyan lehet a helyi tudást nemzetközileg érthetővé tenni?

A Kelet-Közép-Európával, a Baltikummal és Közép-Ázsiával foglalkozó kutatások sokszor néznek szembe azzal a nehézséggel, hogy a sajátos fogalmaikat, helyi kontextusaikat „le kell fordítaniuk” a domináns nyugati akadémiai szókincsre. Ez a folyamat viszont gyakran azzal jár, hogy a helyi sajátosságok és az egyedi szempontok elvesznek.

Ennek a dilemmának a feloldására szervezett nemzetközi workshopot a stockholmi Södertörn University-n a Milestone két munkatársa, Bálint Emese és Masha Semashyna.

A kétnapos rendezvény – teljes nevén: A Vocabulary of Our Own: Translating, Reclaiming, and Creating Concepts for Research in Central Europe, the Baltic Sea Region, and Central Asia – arra kereste a választ, hogyan hozhatnak létre a régióval foglalkozó fiatal kutatók olyan fogalmi eszköztárat, amely egyszerre szabatos és érthető a nemzetközi tudományos szférában, mégsem áldozza fel a helyi kontextusok egyediségét.

A workshopra nyolc ország PhD-hallgatói és pályakezdő kutatói érkeztek. A szakmai diskurzus során a résztvevők túlléptek a nemzeti akadémiai hagyományok közötti különbségeken, és felszínre hozták a mélyebb kihívást: a különböző történelmi birodalmakban meghonosodott szakzsargonok (vocabularies of different empires) közötti átjárhatóságot.

Az esemény különlegességét fokozta, hogy a szervezők a Milestone-ban megszokott mentori tapasztalatot és tanácsadási (advising) gyakorlatot, valamint a feedback-kultúrát is bevetették. A fiatal kutatók előadásait már a workshopot megelőzően segítettek mederbe terelni és finomhangolni, így a prezentációk valódi, egymásra reflektáló párbeszéddé álltak össze a rendezvény végére.

🌍How can local knowledge be made internationally accessible?

Research on Central and Eastern Europe, the Baltic region, and Central Asia often faces the challenge of having to “translate” its distinctive concepts and local contexts into the dominant vocabulary of Western academia. Yet this process often comes at a cost: local specificities and unique perspectives risk being lost.

To address this dilemma, two members of the Milestone team, Emese Bálint and Masha Semashyna, organised an international workshop at Södertörn University in Stockholm.

The two-day event, entitled A Vocabulary of Our Own: Translating, Reclaiming, and Creating Concepts for Research in Central Europe, the Baltic Sea Region, and Central Asia, explored how early-career researchers working on the region can develop a conceptual toolkit that is both precise and accessible within the international academic community, without sacrificing the distinctiveness of local contexts.

PhD students and early-career researchers from eight countries took part in the workshop. Through professional discussions, participants moved beyond the differences between national academic traditions and brought a deeper challenge to the fore: how to navigate between the specialised vocabularies shaped by different historical empires.

What made the event particularly distinctive was the organisers’ use of the mentoring experience, advising practices, and feedback culture that are integral to Milestone. They helped the young researchers structure and refine their presentations ahead of the workshop, enabling the contributions to develop into a genuine dialogue in which participants engaged with and built on one another’s ideas by the end of the event.

Közös gondolkodás, inspiráló viták és Milestone-élmény - a HiFeszt-en jártunk!

Október 5-én a középiskolások országos fesztiválján, a HiFeszt-en képviselték diákszervezeteink a Milestone Intézetet.

📍Mi is az a HiFeszt?

A HiFeszt a középiskolás korosztály egyik legmeghatározóbb hazai eseménye: egy olyan országos találkozóhely, ahol a diákok nemcsak szórakozhatnak, hanem megismerkedhetnek a legmenőbb egyetemi, oktatási és ifjúsági kezdeményezésekkel, tehetséggondozó programokkal és közösségekkel. Egy hely, ami a jövőről, a fejlődésről és az érettségi előtti évekről szól.

👉Ezen a nyüzsgő fesztiválon képviselte a Milestone Intézetet két népszerű diákszervezetünk, a Philosophy Society és a Debate Society. Képviselőik igazi szellemi kihívásokkal és vitaindító kérdésekkel készültek a látogatóknak, amelyek mentén az érdeklődő diákokkal közösen gondolkodtak és beszélgettek. A beszélgetések során a politikától és a környezetvédelemtől kezdve az üzleti életen át egészen a legmélyebb morális dilemmákig számos aktuális témát érintettek.

Az esemény lehetőséget biztosított arra is, hogy a leendő és jelenlegi középiskolás diákok közelebbről megismerjék Intézetünket, programjainkat, közösségünket és az intézeti élet fontos részét képező diákszervezetek sokszínű világát.

Collective thinking, inspiring debates, and the Milestone experience - we attended HiFeszt!

On October 5th, our societies represented the Milestone Institute at HiFeszt, the national festival for high school students.

📍What is HiFeszt?

HiFeszt is one of the most defining domestic events for high schoolers: a national meeting point where students can not only have fun, but also get to know the coolest university, educational, and youth initiatives, talent support programs, and communities. A place that is about the future, growth, and the years leading up to graduation.

👉At this bustling festival, our Institute was represented by two of our popular student societies, the Philosophy Society and the Debate Society. Their representatives prepared real intellectual challenges and thought-provoking questions for visitors, thinking and engaging in discussion alongside interested students. Throughout the conversations, they touched on numerous current topics ranging from politics and environmental protection to business and the deepest moral dilemmas.

The event also provided an opportunity for prospective and current high school students to get a closer look at our Institute, our programs, our community, and the diverse world of student societies, which form an essential part of life at the Institute.

💡Mit tanácsolnának a világ mai vezetői a jövő vezetőinek? Hogyan kapcsolódik mindez Szent István mintegy ezeréves intelmeihez?

Diákunk, Szűcs-Lukovits Lőrinc pontosan ennek járt utána egy egészen elképesztő, 8 hónapos projekt keretében. A kezdeményezés egy történelemórán indult, amikor Szent István Imre hercegnek írt tanításairól tanultak. Lőrincben ekkor merült fel a kérdés, hogy vajon mit mondanának ma a világ legbefolyásosabb vezetői a jövő generációjának.

A válaszért több mint 200 ország és nemzetközi szervezet állam- és kormányfőjét kereste meg e-mailben, levélben és nagykövetségeken keresztül. Összesen 31 országból és az Európai Bizottságtól érkezett válasz. A visszajelzések között különleges személyes üzenetek is voltak: Lőrinc közvetlen választ kapott Szlovénia, Libanon és Dominika elnökétől, Andorra miniszterelnökétől, valamint Skócia és Guernsey első miniszterétől is, III. Károly királytól pedig egy dedikált kártya érkezett.

A válaszok elemzése során kirajzolódott négy fő érték, amelyek szinte pontosan megegyeznek a Szent István által megfogalmazott elvekkel: az oktatás, a tisztelet, a jó jellem és a másokért való cselekvés.

„Bár a világ Szent István kora óta szinte minden szempontból megváltozott, a jó vezetéshez szükséges alapvető értékek mégis nagyon hasonlóak maradtak. Más technológiai környezetben élünk, más politikai rendszerekben működünk, és más kihívásokkal nézünk szembe, de a tisztelet, a tanulás, a becsületesség és a másokért való felelősség ma is ugyanúgy fontosak” – mesélte Lőrinc a tapasztalatairól.

A projekt eredményeit diákunk a TEDx BBIS Youth esemény záróelőadójaként mutathatta be. Az előadásról készült videó eljutott a válaszadó vezetőkhöz is. Új-Zéland miniszterelnöki hivatala postai úton küldött levélben méltatta és nevezte „exceptional”-nek a beszédét. A projekt elismeréseként diákunk elnyerte a rangos COBIS Exceptional Academic Achievement Awardot is!

A projekt legfőbb tanulsága: a jövő formálása nem a felnőttkorban vagy egy pozíció megszerzésével kezdődik, hanem azzal, amit már ma megteszünk. Szívből gratulálunk ehhez a páratlan nemzetközi sikerhez! 👏🎉

💡 What would today’s world leaders advise the leaders of tomorrow? And how does all this connect to the nearly thousand-year-old teachings of Saint Stephen of Hungary?

Our student, Lőrinc Szűcs-Lukovits, set out to explore exactly this question in an extraordinary eight-month project. The initiative began during a history lesson, when the students were learning about the teachings Saint Stephen wrote for his son, Prince Emeric. It was then that Lőrinc began to wonder what the world’s most influential leaders might say today to the next generation.

To find the answer, he reached out to the heads of state and government of more than 200 countries and international organisations by email, letter and through embassies. He received responses from 31 countries and from the European Commission. Among the responses were several highly personal messages: Lőrinc received direct replies from the Presidents of Slovenia, Lebanon and Dominica, the Prime Minister of Andorra, and the First Ministers of Scotland and Guernsey. King Charles III also sent him a signed card.

As he analysed the responses, four key values emerged that closely echoed the principles articulated by Saint Stephen: education, respect, good character, and acting for the benefit of others.

“Although the world has changed in almost every respect since the time of Saint Stephen, the fundamental values needed for good leadership have remained remarkably similar. We live in a different technological environment, operate within different political systems, and face different challenges, but respect, learning, honesty and taking responsibility for others remain just as important today” - Lőrinc reflected on his experience.

Lőrinc had the opportunity to present the findings of his project as the closing speaker at the TEDx BBIS Youth event. A recording of his talk was also shared with the leaders who had responded to him. The Office of the Prime Minister of New Zealand sent him a letter by post praising his speech and describing it as “exceptional”. In recognition of his project, Lőrinc also received the prestigious COBIS Exceptional Academic Achievement Award!

The key lesson of the project is this: shaping the future does not begin in adulthood or with securing a position of influence. It begins with what we choose to do today. We are immensely proud of this remarkable international achievement! 👏🎉

🎉Magyar győzelem a Nemzetközi Kémiai Tornán Dél-Koreában 🇰🇷

Óriási büszkeséggel számolunk be a magyar csapat eredményeiről a Nemzetközi Kémiai Tornán (IChTo). A hosszú és tartalmas út még februárban indult egy ötfeladatos válogatóval, ahonnan a legjobb 12 versenyző jutott be a magyar delegációba (International Chemistry Tournament Hungary). Az ezt követő hónapok hétvégi felkészítőin és egy intenzív nyári táborban a csapattagok felosztották a feladatokat egymás között, csiszolták a prezentációs és opponálási technikáikat, és jobban megismerkedtek egymással.

A dél-koreai kiutazás és az ott töltött idő óriási élményt jelentett a diákoknak, hiszen az intenzív tudományos megmérettetés mellett jutott idő a közös városnézésekre és az ország felfedezésére is. A verseny legfelemelőbb pillanatait a döntő hozta el, ahol a magyar csapat már teljesen természetesen vitázott a hatalmas közönség előtt. „Amikor kiderült, hogy mi lettünk az elsők, némi ürességet éreztünk. A verseny olyan gyorsan eltelt, mégis annyi emlékezetes pillanatot adott, hogy másnap reggel szerintem sokan még a következő vitára gondolva ébredtünk” - emlékezett vissza Zora.

A magyar csapat 1. helyezése mellett Zora az egyéni összetett bronzérmet és a legjobb feladatmegoldó különdíjat is elhozhatta! A sikerek mögött rengeteg kitartó munka, közös felkészülés és egymás iránti bizalom áll. „Szerintem nagyon különleges érzés csapattársakkal vállvetve versenyezni, együtt készülni és közben támogatni egymást. Ezekért az eredményekért mind rengeteget dolgoztunk együtt” - árulta el Zora.

Gratulálunk Zorának és a magyar delegáció összes tagjának a fantasztikus eredményért! 👏

🎉 Hungarian victory at the International Chemistry Tournament in South Korea 🇰🇷

We are incredibly proud to share the achievements of the Hungarian team at the International Chemistry Tournament (IChTo). The long and rewarding journey began back in February with a five-problem selection round, from which the top 12 competitors were selected to join the Hungarian delegation. Over the following months, during weekend training sessions and an intensive summer camp, the team members divided the tasks among themselves, honed their presentation and opposition techniques, and got to know each other better.

Travelling to South Korea and spending time there was an unforgettable experience for the students. Alongside the intense scientific competition, they also had the opportunity to explore the city together and discover the country. The most exhilarating moments of the competition came in the final, where the Hungarian team was already debating confidently and naturally in front of a huge audience.
“When it turned out that we had come first, we felt a little empty. The competition had gone by so quickly, yet it had given us so many memorable moments that, the next morning, I think many of us still woke up thinking about the next debate” - Zora recalled.

In addition to the Hungarian team’s first-place finish, Zora also took home an individual overall bronze medal and the special award for the best problem solver!
Behind these achievements lie countless hours of hard work, joint preparation, and trust in one another. “I think it is a very special feeling to compete side by side with your teammates, prepare together, and support each other along the way. We all worked incredibly hard together to achieve these results”- Zora shared.

Congratulations to Zora and to every member of the Hungarian delegation on this fantastic achievement! 👏

🤝Egy héten át a közösségépítésé és a megszámlálhatatlan új élményé volt a főszerep nálunk szeptember közepén. Diákszervezeteink, a különféle society-k vezetői elképesztő programkínálattal készültek, hogy mindenki belekóstolhasson a klubok sokszínű világába, és megtalálja a hozzá legközelebb álló közösséget.

Hétfőn a Politics Society egy izgalmas politikai Kahoot-kvízzel mérettette meg a résztvevők tudását, a Philosophy Society az én-kép filozófiai kérdéseit feszegette, míg a History Society a „London is burning: what happens next?” témájával készült. A napot a Psychology Society zárta egy pörgős, közösségépítő társasjáték-esttel, ahol a hazugság köré épülő játékoké – mint a Secret Hi**er vagy a Kamu – volt a főszerep.

Kedd délután a Medical and Healthcare Society kencekészítő workshopján a tagok saját aloe verás és körömvirágos krémeket keverhettek ki. Ugyanezen a napon a United Civil Society egy igazán édes kezdeményezéssel készült: a diákok elhozták a kedvenc házi sütijeiket, és egy jó hangulatú kóstoló keretében gyűjtöttek adományokat egy jó ügyért.

Pénteken a Business Society vendége Csikesz Erika volt, aki több évtizedes média- és reklámipari tapasztalatait, valamint a digitális transzformáció kulisszatitkait osztotta meg a diákokkal. A Chinese Club jóvoltából a tradicionális Hanfu öltözékek szépségét fedezhették fel a résztvevők, a Student Representative Council (SRC) szervezésében pedig egy fergeteges laser tag csatával zárult az este.

Szombaton a Debating Society minivitákkal edzette a résztvevőket, míg az Arts Society műhelyén egyedi, kézzel készült ékszerek – gyűrűk, karkötők és fülbevalók – születtek. Az Engineering Society a klasszikus tojásejtő (Egg drop) kihívással tesztelte a kreatív mérnöki megoldásokat, a MUN Society pedig a dél-kínai-tengeri feszültségek szimulált vitájával adta meg a globális diplomácia ízét.

🤝For an entire week in mid-September, community building and countless new experiences took center stage for us. The leaders of our student organisations and various societies prepared an incredible range of programmes, giving everyone the chance to get a taste of the diverse world of clubs and find the community that suited them best.

On Monday, the Politics Society put participants’ knowledge to the test with an exciting political Kahoot quiz, while the Philosophy Society explored philosophical questions surrounding the concept of the self. Meanwhile, the History Society tackled the thought-provoking topic “London is burning: what happens next?”. The day concluded with an energetic, community-building board game night organised by the Psychology Society, where games revolving around deception – such as Secret Hi**er and Kamu – took centre stage.

On Tuesday afternoon, members of the Medical and Healthcare Society had the opportunity to create their own aloe vera and calendula creams during a hands-on cosmetics workshop. On the same day, the United Civil Society came up with a truly sweet initiative: students brought along their favourite homemade baked goods and, during a cheerful tasting event, raised donations for a good cause.

On Friday, the Business Society welcomed Erika Csikesz, who shared her decades of experience in the media and advertising industries, as well as insights into the behind-the-scenes world of digital transformation. Thanks to the Chinese Club, participants could discover the beauty of traditional Hanfu clothing, while the Student Representative Council brought the evening to a thrilling close with an action-packed game of laser tag.

On Saturday, the Debating Society put participants’ skills to the test with mini-debates, while the Arts Society workshop saw the creation of unique, handmade pieces of jewellery, including rings, bracelets and earrings. The Engineering Society challenged participants to come up with creative engineering solutions in the classic Egg Drop Challenge, while the MUN Society brought a taste of global diplomacy to life with a simulated debate on tensions in the South China Sea.

🎓 Milyen eséllyel jut el valaki Oxfordban vagy Cambridge-ben az interjúig, és mi történik akkor, amikor elfogy az előre megtanult válasz? 🤔

Szeptember 19-én a Svábhegyi Csillagvizsgálóban indult el a brit egyetemekre készülő diákjaink számára a Milestone Tutorial Camp. A különleges helyszín - a Detre László Auditoriumtól és a Szeidl Béla teremtől kezdve az őszi napsütésben úszó kertig és a csillagvizsgáló kupoláiig - tökéletes hátteret adott a rendkívül intenzív, mégis inspiráló felkészülésnek, ahol még a csillagvizsgáló macskája is társaságot nyújtott a szünetekben. ✨

A diákok már a nyitó előadáson szembesülhettek a kemény számokkal: míg Cambridge-ben a jelentkezők mintegy 60–70%-a, addig Oxfordban a nemzetközi diákoknak csupán a 28,5%-a jut el az interjúig. Az interjún a valódi szellemi kíváncsiságra, a szakmai gondolkodásmódra, valamint a taníthatóságra kíváncsiak - vagyis arra, hogyan reagál valaki egy új információra, és képes-e menet közben, rugalmasan újratervezni az érvelését.

🎓 What are your chances of making it to the interview stage at Oxford or Cambridge, and what happens when you run out of prepared answers? 🤔

On September 19, the Milestone Tutorial Camp kicked off at the Svábhegy Observatory for our students preparing to apply to British universities. The unique venue - from the László Detre Auditorium and the Béla Szeidl Room to the garden bathed in autumn sunshine and the observatory’s domes - provided the perfect backdrop for an exceptionally intensive yet inspiring preparation programme, with even the observatory’s cat keeping the students company during breaks. ✨

Students were confronted with some hard numbers right from the opening presentation: while approximately 60–70% of applicants make it to the interview stage at Cambridge, only 28.5% of international applicants do so at Oxford. However, the key takeaway of the day was not the statistics themselves, but the realisation that British professors look for much more than factual knowledge in their applicants. During interviews, they are interested in genuine intellectual curiosity, subject-specific thinking, and teachability - in other words, how applicants respond to new information and whether they can adapt and rethink their arguments flexibly as they go along.

Instead, it is a subject-specific academic discussion in which students are pushed to the limits of their knowledge. This is when their true thinking process becomes apparent: how they reason, how they use new information, and how they approach a problem they have never encountered before.” - Miklós Dürr, Head of UK Cohort at Milestone.

Through mock interviews, TMUA, ESAT, TARA and LNAT practice tests, as well as the writing sessions of the Writing Retreat, students were able to experience first-hand one of the most important keys to a successful application: knowledge is essential, but it is not enough on its own. What matters most is having the courage to keep thinking, even when you don't have a ready-made answer in your back pocket. 💡
