We were delighted to co-host the COST workshop “The Child Patient and Medical Expertise in Times of War, Crisis, and Transformation” in Budapest. Organized by Annina Gagyiova from the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague, and Friederike Kind-Kovács from the Hannah Arendt Institute at TU Dresden, the event brought together international scholars for engaging discussions on children, healthcare, and medical expertise across historical contexts. Many thanks to the participants for an inspiring day of exchange. We look forward to future collaborations! 🤗

This week IAS CEU had the pleasure of bringing together prominent scholars and public figures from Hungary and Slovakia for a timely and thought-provoking workshop titled "Slovakia and Hungary in 2026: Challenges and Opportunities."
Participants explored the dynamics of de-democratization and re-democratization over the past decade, and discussed how a more constructive cooperation between our countries could look beyond today’s illiberal partnership. We are grateful to everyone who contributed to such an open, honest, and inspiring exchange. The dialogue continues.

Last week the Institute for Advanced Study at Central European University hosted the workshop "Caravans on the New Silk Road: Chinese Soft Power and the Hungarian Mafia State," bringing together leading Hungarian experts and internationally renowned scholars to explore the dynamics of Chinese influence-building in Hungary under the Orbán government.
The event provided a platform to rethink political, economic, socio-cultural, and institutional dimensions within a broader transnational and comparative context. The workshop fostered candid discussion and meaningful dialogue across disciplines and perspectives. We thank all participants for their valuable contributions to this timely and important conversation.
