On November 20th, the CEU’s Energy Policy Research Group hosted the panel “Through the lenses of extractivism: postcolonialism and the energy transition.” The event featured a panel of distinguished speakers who have dealt with specific case studies of extractivism and its effects on local communities in countries from the Global South and the periphery of the Global North:
• Alf Hornborg - Professor of Human Ecology at Lund University
• Alberto Matarán Ruiz - Professor at the Urban and Regional Planning Department at the University of Granada
• Josefa Sánchez Contreras - Ph.D. Researcher at the Department of Sociology at the University of Granada.
The discussion was centred around extractivism as a mechanism of exploitation in the context of energy transition, starting from the consideration that the shift from a fuel-intensive to a material-intensive energy system does not come without a high cost to local communities, related to the continuous need for replenishment of raw materials.
We thank everyone who joined us during this insightful discussion!
