🔬 A Day in the Life – Looking Beyond the Microscope
What does a pathologist actually do? Contrary to popular belief, their work extends far beyond microscopes and autopsies. Pathologists play a crucial role in diagnosing diseases, guiding treatment decisions, and supporting patient care behind the scenes.
In our latest “A Day in the Life” feature, we follow Dr. Richárd Kiss, Assistant Lecturer at Semmelweis University’s Department of Pathology and Experimental Cancer Research. From examining tissue samples to contributing to life-changing diagnoses, his work reveals the complexity and impact of modern pathology.

A young woman’s ability to walk and her quality of life have been restored thanks to a highly specialized procedure performed at Semmelweis University.
In a remarkable example of multidisciplinary collaboration, experts from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Department of Neurosurgery and Neurointervention successfully removed a rare pelvic schwannoma—a benign tumor of neurological origin—using a minimally invasive laparoscopic technique. Supported by advanced intraoperative neuromonitoring technology, the team was able to preserve critical nerve functions while safely removing the tumor.
The procedure highlights the unique expertise of Semmelweis University’s Neuropelveology Program, the only center in Central and Eastern Europe performing such operations with intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring.
The surgery was a success, and the patient was discharged fully recovered the very next day.
