🌸 From cancer research to floriculture: Two worlds, one curiosity.

Dr. Otília Menyhart, Assistant Professor at Semmelweis University's Department of Bioinformatics, studies the genetic mechanisms of cancer while also running her own flower garden. Both pursuits are driven by her passion for experimentation, continuous learning, and understanding complex systems.

A former zoologist who studied bird behavior at Cornell University, she now develops bioinformatics methods that could contribute to more effective, personalized cancer therapies. Her work earned her the 2026 Hungarian L’Oréal–UNESCO For Women in Science Fellowship.

Beyond the laboratory, she cultivates thousands of flowers in her 1,500-square-meter garden.

From international student to dentist, researcher, and university lecturer.

Dr. Arvin Shahbazi graduated from Semmelweis University in 2014 and chose to build his career in Hungary, combining clinical dentistry with research and teaching.

At the latest Meet the Alumni event, organized by Semmelweis Alumni, he shared his journey with current students, encouraging them to explore opportunities, embrace challenges, and start building their professional networks while still at university.

🔵 Recurrent abdominal pain in children may be linked to school-related stress

A study by Semmelweis University researchers involving 522 Hungarian schoolchildren found that recurrent abdominal pain without an identifiable organic cause may be associated with school-related stress and peer harassment.

More than 80% of adolescents with functional abdominal pain disorders experienced pain in at least two parts of the body, while over half had been experiencing symptoms for at least a year. Those affected also reported lower health-related quality of life.

Dr. János Major, first author of the study, emphasizes that pain in other parts of the body may indicate a more complex pain disorder.

Dr. Szilvia Ádám, last author, warns that persistent pain should not be dismissed. Early treatment and appropriate support can help prevent symptoms from continuing into adulthood.

🔬 Advancing medical education through innovation and international collaboration

The inaugural AICER Symposium brought together international clinicians, researchers and medical innovators at Semmelweis University on October 9–10.

A major highlight was the signing of two international cooperation agreements. Semmelweis University joined the OrtoPhD initiative of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School and established a partnership with the Foot and Ankle Research and Innovativon Laboratory (FARIL).

The two-day event featured presentations on surgical robotics, medical imaging and AI-driven technologies, alongside hands-on workshops and live demonstrations.

👏 Dr. Botond Roska, a former Semmelweis University student and visiting professor, has received one of the world's most prestigious awards in vision research.

He shared the António Champalimaud Vision Award with French-American researcher José-Alain Sahel for their pioneering work on optogenetic therapy aimed at restoring vision.

Dr. Roska has collaborated with Semmelweis University for 15 years, contributing to research that could help treat certain forms of blindness.

Recent clinical results are promising: Seven of the first 10 patients treated experienced improved light perception, with clinically significant improvements in six. Dr. Roska hopes the therapy will eventually become available to patients in Hungary as well.

🔵 A medical milestone at Semmelweis University: Hungary’s first three-way living-donor kidney exchange has been successfully completed.

Three patients received new kidneys through a cross-donation program that overcame incompatibilities with their original donors. The complex procedures involved nearly 30 healthcare professionals working across three operating rooms over approximately six hours, including one robot-assisted donor kidney removal.

All three donors have been discharged, and two of the recipients are already recovering at home, with the third expected to follow soon. The achievement highlights how living-donor kidney exchange programs can offer new hope to patients waiting for a transplant.

🔵 Semmelweis University has opened a new molecular pathology laboratory to support more precise cancer diagnosis and personalized treatment.

The IMPACT laboratory brings advanced genetic and molecular testing closer to everyday clinical care. Among the new technologies, optical genome mapping will become part of routine patient care in Hungary for the first time, while next-generation sequencing can help doctors select targeted treatments and support advanced diagnostics for acute leukemias.

The Department of Pathology and Experimental Cancer Research already performs more than 20,000 molecular tests each year, serving clinical centers across Hungary.

The nearly HUF 500 million development also significantly expands the university’s cancer research capabilities.

🚑 A Day in the Life – Every Minute Matters

What happens when a patient arrives at the emergency department? One of the first and most important steps is triage: assessing how urgent the patient’s condition is and determining what kind of care is needed. A triage nurse has no more than three minutes to make that initial assessment.
